About Tapestry, Inc.

Tapestry is weaving together a collection of leading premium fashion brands. Previously Coach, the company designs and makes (mostly through third parties) high-end leather goods and accessories, including handbags, wallets, and luggage under the Coach brand. It also licenses the Coach name for watches, eyewear, and fragrances. In addition, through acquisitions, Tapestry owns the Stuart Weitzman (luxury women's shoes) and Kate Spade (women's apparel and accessories) brands. The company sells its wares through department and outlet stores (in the US and globally) and websites. It also operates more than 1,500 retail and factory outlet stores in North America, Japan, China, and other countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

Operations

Tapestry reports through three primary segments: Coach (some 70% of revenue), Kate Spade (nearly a quarter), and Stuart Weitzman (about 5%).

The Coach brand include leather goods and accessories such as handbags, wallets, wristlets, and cosmetic cases. It also licenses its name to third parties for watches (Movado), eyewear (Luxottica), and fragrances (Interparfums). The segment's products are sold through some 1,600 wholesale and distributor locations as well as about 980 Coach stores.

Kate Spade’s offerings include handbags, ready-to-wear, jewelry, footwear, gifts, and home décor. The brand is also licensed to third parties for bedding, eyewear, tableware, and a host of other products. The segment's products are sold through some 1,200 wholesale and distributor locations as well as more than 400 Kate Spade stores.

Footwear is the domain of Stuart Weitzman, although the brand is expanding into handbags and accessories. Its products are sold through some 1,100 wholesale and distributor locations as well as some 150 Stuart Weitzman stores.

Direct-to-consumer sales account for about 90% of revenue.

Geographic Reach

Tapestry directly operates more than 1,500 stores in North America and the Asia-Pacific region. Leading markets include the US (about 55% of sales), China (about 15%), and Japan (more than 10%).

The New York-based company has distribution, product development, and quality control locations in the US, Canada, Hong Kong, China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, Spain, the UK, and India.

Sales and Marketing

In addition to its own 1,500-plus stores, Tapestry's products are sold through department stores and other third-party retailers in North America and Europe. Top US wholesale customers include Macy's (including Bloomingdale's), Dillard's, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor, The Bay, Belk, and Von Maur.

The company also has e-commerce sites in North America, Europe, Greater China, Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong.

Tapestry spent $247.1 million for advertising in 2019, up from $228.4 million and $178.3 million in 2018 and 2017, respectively.

Financial Performance

The acquisition of sister fashion brands has boosted Tapestry's revenue some 45% over the past five years. Excluding a dip in fiscal 2018, net income has also shown strong growth, up 60% since fiscal 2015.

In fiscal 2019 (ended June) the company reported revenue of $6 billion, up 3% from the prior year. Sales increased across all three brands (excluding the effects of foreign currency), although the Kate Spade brand was the primary growth engine due to 60-plus new store openings.

Net income that year was also up, jumping 62% to $643.4 million. Lower cost of sales and lower taxes, as a result of the 2017 Tax Act, powered results.

Cash at the end of fiscal 2019 was $969.2 million, a decrease of $274.2 million from the prior year. Cash from operations contributed $791.7 million to the coffers, while investing activities used $574.2 million, mainly for investments and capital expenditures. Financing activities used another $484.9 million for dividends to stockholders and stock repurchase.

Strategy

Among Tapestry's strategic priorities are brand innovation, digital and data analytic investment, and global growth with a special emphasis on China.

The company is focused on improving its production planning cycle and speed to market as it accelerates product innovation across its brands, including planned customization programs. In a related move, in fiscal 2020 Tapestry is bringing in-house the Kate Spade footwear business. It is particularly focused on innovation in the growing premium bags and small leather goods, and  footwear and outerwear categories.

In fiscal 2019 the company named a new Chief Data Officer and launched its Data Labs portal, which includes data science and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to improve the retailer's collection and use of data.

Tapestry has made several moves to expand in China, which the company refers to as its ChinaNext agenda. In September 2019 it announced a partnership with Alibaba's Tmall, China's largest B2C ecommerce platform. Coach, Kate Spade, and Stuart Weitzman will all have flagship stores on the Tmall Luxury Pavilion platform.

Mergers and Acquisitions

In fiscal 2018 Tapestry acquired luxury apparel and accessories designer Kate Spade & Co. for $2.4 billion. Upon completion, the company changed its name from Coach and organized operations around its three luxury brands.

Company Background

Tapestry traces its roots to the 1941 founding of leather goods maker Coach, Inc., which was acquired by Sara Lee Corporation in 1985. It went public in 2000 and Sara Lee divested its remaining ownership in 2001.

Coach acquired Stuart Weitzman, a luxury women's footwear firm, in fiscal 2015 and Kate Spade, a lifestyle accessories and ready-to-wear company, in fiscal 2018. That year the company changed its name to Tapestry to reflect its multi-brand portfolio.
