Summer Internship Program
The Intern Connection Program (ICP) is a companywide, structured program to promote learning about Union Pacific, discovering the functional departments, opportunities for community volunteering, networking and communication with senior leaders. The ICP will have organized events throughout the year, with a peak season in the summer, as more interns join from a variety of universities. Events include orientation, networking, “Learning from Leaders” series, and “Your Railroad Fit”.

As an intern, you will help core business groups achieve their vision and business objectives by applying technology to improve their processes, systems, and services. You will build knowledge and experience with Union Pacific's IT environment and development processes. The intern candidate will have extensive contact with experienced developers, engineers, and peers, and have opportunities to interact with senior leaders. There will also be an opportunity to put your leadership, technical skills and business knowledge to immediate use through valued project assignments.

  • Assist with project management for various company initiatives and complete administrative tasks and special projects
  • Learn and perform core department business group work tasks, processes, and customer services
  • Perform administrative support for department business group managers
  • Develop and execute project action plans and perform team assignments
  • Build and strengthen a network of professional contacts within departments and across the company
  • Perform other duties as assigned


  • College student
  • Proficient with a Linux based or Windows OS
  • Basic organization AND prioritization skills
  • Basic time and project management skills
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with programming/scripting
  • Authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship

Program Overview

  • Compensation/Benefits: Paid
  • Duration: Varies; Interns can work full time over the summer and part time during the school year
  • Academic Level: High School Students, College Freshmen, College Sophomores, College Juniors, College Seniors, Graduate Students, Business School Students
  • Degree Track: Associate’s Degree, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Business Administration, Master of Science
  • Industry Experience: 0-1 year
  • Minimum GPA Preferred: 2.50-2.99
