Arthur D. Little has been at the forefront of innovation since 1886. Founded in Boston in 1886, Arthur D. Little is the world's first management consulting firm. The pioneering spirit of the founder who lent the firm its name is the stuff of legend-and the firm he founded is still going strong, even after completing a journey that has seen it go from private entity to public corporation, and back to private partnership following a 2011 management buyout by its now Partners.   

The consultants it employs today find themselves operating in Europe, Asia, and the Americas offering tailored services to clients in in a range of industries across three main functional practice areas.  Consultants operate across a matrix structure of functional practices and industry practices which provide opportunities to work on a range of industries and functional areas.

Today, Arthur D. Little is an established consultancy with strong brand equity in most markets it operates in. The firm has further developed its reach by opening new offices, and has a clear positioning revolving around Strategy, Innovation, and Transformation; this translates into 3 key themes: Anticipates (trends), Innovate (business, products, eco-systems), and Transform (organization) which are represented in the following functional practice areas:

  • Strategy & Organization – including classic Strategy work and Trend analysis but increasingly looking at strategy can be used to drive transformation

  • Technology & Innovation Management - Including ADL’s distinctive strength in management of innovation as well as Digital Problem Solving to create innovative and transformative solutions

  • Operations Management – improving performance and driving transformation

  • Risk Management – anticipating risks and reducing the impact of risks on transformation

In Europe & the Middle East 

In the recent past, Europe was the stronghold of ADL's operations-indeed, ADL operates offices in 16 different cities in Europe covering the whole range of functional and industry practices and employing a fair share of the firm's entire consulting staff.  For junior staff, the majority of casework typically takes place within national markets, although there are increasing opportunities for project related travel.  Consultants and Managers can take part in ADL's global Short Term Mobility Program and move between offices for periods of 6 months or less.  Mobility for more senior people is also encouraged. 

ADL serves the entire Middle East region from three offices in Dubai, Riyadh and Beirut covering the whole range of functional and industry practices. 

For entry level positions, ADL often recruits scientists and engineers as well as economics graduates from the best local schools / universities. Training (global and local) is provided as part of career development and new consultants can expect to attend one or two training sessions in their first years.  In addition ADL provides online training in a number of topic areas to allow consultants to specialize. 

For more experienced hires, ADL tends to look for consultants who possess strong practical industry experience combined with excellent knowledge of key trends and dynamics.  Arthur D. Little puts emphasis on not only strong analytical skills, client orientation and teaming, but also on creativity, entrepreneurial attitude, and communication.  Recent expansion means that a number of Partner level hires have taken place, together with internal promotions.  

ADL is active in on-campus recruitment at a range of different leading universities across Europe.  Most of the offices offer an active internship program for graduates (often leading to direct entry employment following internship).  At the Business Analyst and Consultant level we have significantly increased the percentage of recruitment from staff that have undertaken ADL internships so internships should be seen as an extended interview process. 


Scaling up

Arthur D. Little revenues have grown at a rate of 10-12% CAGR over 2013-2018.  There has been a net addition of 56 new partners since the 2011 MBO through internal promotion or external recruitment. In the last year Arthur D. Little Europe and Middle East have opened offices in Oslo and Bayreuth.  The firm expects to continue to invest in recruiting new partners in 2018-19 in existing and new offices which will drive recruitment for junior grades. 

Whilst the early years following the MBO were focused on improving efficiency the last years has seen a shift towards growth. Whilst the company is private and performance data is hard to come by we understand from our survey and interview that they have maintained year on year growth since 2011 with increasing profitability.  Our survey also reveals that the company has a very healthy cash reserve to support growth or weather any economic downturn (and a positive cash balance - unlike some of their competitors). 

Firm management report that they have undertaken an internal reflection on ADL's positioning, resulting in a reworked market positioning around helping clients "Anticipate, Innovate and Transform."  The new positioning is guiding a number of internal change projects which seek to integrate these activities into new ways of working.


Arthur D. Little has launched a number of local country and global diversity initiatives to increase diversity in recruitment both at entry level but also to retain and recruit experienced staff returning from maternity or paternity leave.
