About Williams Mullen

Williams Mullen is a full-service law firm with more than 230 attorneys in offices across Virginia; North Carolina; South Carolina; and Washington, DC. Williams Mullen provides its clients with the sort of legal service that comes with its AmLaw 200 size, with fees that undercut its big city rivals.

Teaming Up in Richmond

Back in 1909, Richmond, VA attorneys Lewis C. Williams and James Mullen decided to team up to provide legal services to businesses navigating a changing regulatory atmosphere. When Congress adopted the federal income tax a few years later in 1913, their bet paid off, and the firm flourished and grew. Over the years, it has expanded the range and scope of its services. Under the leadership of former firm CEO (and now Chairman Emeritus) Joey Smith, the firm expanded from 25 lawyers in Richmond in the mid-1980s to its current size, and through six different mergers the firm has added attorneys and four more offices in Virginia, as well as one each in DC, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Depth and Breadth

Williams Mullen can service their corporate clients in almost any area, though there is a significant state and federal government relations practice. Its practice groups include corporate law, litigation, finance and real estate. In addition, the firm offers more specialized practices, including employee benefits & executive compensation, environmental law, intellectual property, government contracts, government relations, health care, intellectual property, labor & employment, tax law and white collar & investigations. Clients include multinational Fortune 500 companies, private family-owned businesses, nonprofit organizations and government entities.

Giving Back

Attorneys at Williams Mullen are asked on their first day at the firm what community organization they are passionate about, and then the firm gets behind those efforts. Each year the firm and its charitable foundation give back more than $500,000 and firm employees donate thousands of volunteer hours to more than 200 nonprofit organizations in its local communities. Firm attorneys and staff hold more than 250 leadership positions on boards and committees of nonprofit organizations, arts foundations, legal aid societies, colleges, and universities.
