About Torys LLP

Torys LLP is a globally-recognized Canadian law firm with offices in Toronto, New York, Calgary, Montréal, and Halifax. The firm was founded in 1941 by prominent Toronto business lawyer John Stewart Donald Tory, who had graduated at the top of his class at Osgoode Hall, and earned a J.D. from Harvard University. In 1954, Mr. Tory’s twin sons John A. Tory and James M. Tory joined the firm. When John S.D. Tory passed away in 1965, his sons took over the firm, they grew the firm by maintaining and developing relationships with leading corporate clients. In the late 1960s, the firm added a litigation practice, which was enhanced a few years later with the firm's 1972 merger with Kimber, Dubin.

In 2000 the firm merged with a 50-year-old New York corporate firm and rebranded as Torys LLP. The opening of the New York office moved Torys from being one of Canada's most recognized corporate law firms into one of the leading Canada/U.S. cross-border firms in North America. The New York team has grown to nearly 50 lawyers. Since 2011 Torys has expanded further in Canada, opening offices in Calgary, Montréal, and Halifax, Nova Scotia.
