About Thompson Hine LLP

Thompson Hine is a Cleveland-based firm with national strength in numerous practice areas, including construction, transportation, environmental law, real estate, banking and finance, bankruptcy, corporate law, intellectual property, and litigation. Though the bulk of the firm's legal team and practice is in Ohio, it also has bustling offices in Washington, DC; Atlanta; and New York.

New Beginnings in Old Cleveland

In 1893, Cleveland attorney A.B. Thompson founded a solo practice. In 1907, he entered into a partnership with Charles B. Hine, and in 1911, the duo teamed up with Walter Flory (Thompson Hine dropped "Flory" from its name in 2001). In its nascent years in early 20th century Cleveland—then a manufacturing and banking focal point in the country—the firm's clients included Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. and Society Bank (which later became KeyCorp).

Thompson Hine made national headlines in 2011 when it elected tax attorney Deborah Z. Read as managing partner of the firm. Read became the first woman to head a large Cleveland firm at a time when only 10 AmLaw 200 firms nationally were helmed by women.

Today, Thompson Hine remains a force in Ohio's legal market and beyond. The firm maintains a strong Midwestern presence, with four offices and hundreds of attorneys in Ohio. It works with Ohio chapters of banks like Huntington, PNC, Fifth Third, and Wells Fargo, and it has played a role in the construction of several of Cleveland's notable downtown structures. The firm is also counsel for the owner of Cleveland's landmark Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Venture Forth, Young Companies

Thompson Hine has played a role in giving a boost to emerging companies, both in corporate organization and intellectual property matters. According to firm lore, early Thompson Hine associate James Weeks worked with Depression-era industrialist Arthur LaRue Parker to form Parker Hannifin, a motion technology company that would grow to become a global force in technology. Today, the firm gives counsel to emerging tech ventures from wind power companies to stem cell researchers. Recently, the firm has focused on expanding its intellectual property practice, which has dealt with bioscience, energy, and technology issues, among others.
