About Sherman & Howard L.L.C.

With more than 180 lawyers in offices out West, Sherman & Howard refers to itself as a “regional firm with a national practice.” The firm backs up this claim with its full set of practices serving clients in industries from health care and construction to financial services and outer space.

A Little History

Founded in 1892, Sherman & Howard is the oldest firm in Denver. Its roots trace back to a single practitioner, James H. Pershing, who opened his practice in Denver's Equitable Building—now an historic landmark. Named partners Samuel Sherman and Winston Howard joined the firm as associates just a few months apart in 1936 and were added to the masthead 20 years later. Today, the firm operates out of 10 offices throughout the West and in St. Louis.

Big and Small, Serving Them All

Sherman & Howard provides a full array of corporate and litigation services to companies both small and large, public and private. One standout area of expertise is financing—according to the firm, in recent years it has represented clients in more than 200 deals exceeding $13 billion. On the public finance side, the firm is routinely hired as bond, issuer’s, tax, borrower’s, disclosure, and underwriter’s counsel to navigate public and nonprofit sector finance projects. As the original drafters of many western states’ authorizing bond statutes, the firm has valuable insider knowledge to draw on for its clients.

On the litigation side, Sherman & Howard handles all manner of lawsuits and arbitrations. The firm’s employment litigation group is one of its most notable, touting a long list of victories on a variety of workplace issues. Recent wins for the group include a full defense verdict for an aviation company regarding its hiring practices, a Colorado state appellate win regarding a company’s classification of independent contractors, and a summary judgment victory in favor of a telecommunications company facing discrimination claims.

When it isn’t representing businesses, Sherman & Howard has plenty of expertise to offer individual clients. The firm handles private client matters like trusts & estates, family law, criminal defense, residential real estate, and farm and ranch issues.

Out of this World

When it comes to outer space, Sherman & Howard has a unique expertise. To advise clients in this area, the firm’s space law attorneys draw on their collective experience working with the International Institute of Space Law, the U.S. Air Force, and Russian satellite companies. Space-related projects that bring clients to Sherman & Howard include the purchase and operation of space assets, the leasing and launching of satellites, and the navigation of launch services and insurance issues.
