About Seed Intellectual Property Law Group LLP

Seed IP is a leading intellectual property law firm based in the Pacific Northwest, with more than fifty patent attorneys and patent agents and a staff of over seventy professionals.

Partners with Expertise

Seed Intellectual Property Law Group was founded in 1962 by Richard W. Seed and Benjamin F. Berry. The firm’s one-office Seattle shop is armed with lawyers and professionals with expertise in everything from mechanical engineering and biotechnology to software and microphonics to communication technologies. The firm takes pride in considering all aspects of a client’s business when it comes developing an overall IP strategy—according to the firm, “it’s not just about writing [patent] applications.”

Big and Small, Patents for All

Seed IP handles matters including litigation and mediation, strategic counseling, licensing, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and trademarks. The firm is also a major league player when it comes to patent work. With a total of more than 45,000 patents since the firm opened its doors, Seed IP works to obtain thousands of patents each year—and the number has been steadily climbing each year in recent history.

Seed IP’s clients range in size from individuals and start-up companies to established multinational corporations with IP needs ranging from trademark clearance to protecting complex chemical and biotechnology patents. The firm has a strong reputation for working with startups at all stages of funding to create an intellectual property strategy for the developing company. Some bigger-name clients include GlaxoSmithKline, Panasonic Corporation, The Pokémon Company, Red Robin International, Audi AG, Amazon.com, Facebook, Inc., and The Walt Disney Company. The roster also includes government clients like the U.S. Army and the Environmental Protection Agency.

Shaping the Future of Seattle IP

Since 2003, Seed IP has awarded two Seed Intellectual Property Law Group’s Founders Scholarships each year. The scholarship honors the firm’s founders, Richard W. Seed and Benjamin F. Berry. The scholarship goes to one law student each at the University of Washington and Seattle University, supporting homegrown IP talent in the Pacific Northwest.
