About Porter Wright Morris & Arthur LLP
Porter Wright Morris & Arthur is a full-service firm with deep roots in Ohio and branches extending to DC, Florida, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. The firm is known for its banking and financing, commercial litigation, corporate, labor and employment, M&A, and real estate practices.
Ohio Roots, National Footprint
Though a largely regional firm, Porter Wright has a track record of getting involved in national affairs. Founder Richard Harrison began his legal career in 1846, riding on horseback from town to town to provide legal services to much of central Ohio. Later, as a member of the Ohio Senate, he wrote its resolution of support to keep Ohio in the Union during the Civil War. In 1963, firm partner Earl Morris worked on the Harding Papers affair—a blackmail scandal involving President Harding’s letters to his mistress. Not ten years later, partner Sam Porter led the defense of the Columbus Board of Education’s desegregation of its public schools.
At the core of Porter Wright’s practice is “inspiration.” The firm indicates that inspiration is its “fuel” to help it “work smart, reach further, and deliver stronger outcomes.” And it must be working because the firm has been recognized time and again by the likes of BTI Consulting, Chambers, IFLR 1000, Best Lawyers, and U.S. News & World Report.
The firm counsels clients across dozens of practice areas. In the corporate arena, the firm has particular strength in banking and finance and M&A. The firm’s labor and employment lawyers are a skilled bunch, advising on a variety of matters—from hiring to training to terminating employees—and also providing clients with HR audits to focus on compliance matters and potential risks. Another standout practice for the firm is environmental law, through which the firm handles a variety of matters, including chemicals, compliance, environmental litigation and toxic tort, permits, property development, transactional matters, and water—to name some.
In addition to their legal skills, Porter Wright lawyers also know how to flex their writing muscles. Indeed, the firm has not just one but seven blogs: Antitrust Law Source, Banking & Finance Law Report, Employee Benefits Law Report, Employer Law Report, Federal Securities Law Source, Oil & Gas Law Report, and Technology Law Source. On top of its blogging, the firm is active in sharing its content and other happenings, with an active Facebook presence.
