About Nexsen Pruet
Nexsen Pruet is an AmLaw 200 firm with more than 180 attorneys operating out of its eight offices in the Carolinas. Seventy-five years after its humble beginnings as a two-man South Carolina firm, it is now one of the largest and most profitable in the Southeast. A general business-oriented practice, Nexsen Pruet has a client roster that includes a number of the Carolina’s best-known companies and institutions, like the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, Sisters of Charity Providence Hospitals, Wells Fargo, and Honda Manufacturing of North America.
In 1945, Paul Cooper and Frank Gary founded the firm that would later become Nexsen Pruet in Columbia, South Carolina. Cooper & Gary, as it was then known, quickly established itself in South Carolina's Capital and attracted top-tier clients like the City of Columbia, First National Bank, and South Carolina Electric and Gas. Julian J. Nexsen was one of the firm’s first four hires out of the University of South Carolina and would go on to become managing partner of the firm that would one day bear his name. He continued to come into the office every day into the 2000s and helped build the firm into its modern form, by hiring, as he put it “attorneys based on integrity and skill.” Through the ’80s, ’90s, and 2000s, the firm merged with existing practices and opened offices in new locations, in Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh, NC as well as Columbia, Charleston, Greenville, Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach, SC.
Full-Service, Total Resources
As a full-service law firm with a comprehensive range of specialties, Nexsen Pruet represents clients of all sizes in areas such as health care, employment, intellectual property, real estate, construction, corporate, finance, and taxation. The firm boasts Chambers-ranked practices in banking & finance, bankruptcy/restructuring, construction, litigation, corporate/M&A, environment, labor and employment, and real estate. Firm successes include helping South Carolina land the production plant for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, aiding in the construction of the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center, and developing the Rural America Bond program to support agribusinesses across America.
While the firm focuses on proving legal services to its clients, it has spun out two related businesses in recent years to build on its attorneys’ expertise. In 2013, the firm launched NP Strategy, a communications and crisis management subsidiary to help people navigate the waters of South Carolina. And in 2017, the firm launched Nextra Solutions, its information management and advisory service business to provide service in eDiscovery, information governance, computer forensics, data analytics, information security, technology and IT consulting, and staffing.
