About Moore & Van Allen PLLC
This Charlotte, NC, stalwart is one of the largest law firms in the Southeast and for the last decade and a half has been the only Charlotte-based law firm in the national top 100 in profits per partner. With more than 300 attorneys working out of only two offices—and 90 percent of those out of the Charlotte HQ—Moore & Van Allen is a regional powerhouse. The firm has particular expertise in banking and financial transactions, and each year ranks among top firms nationally in the number of syndicated loan transactions handled.
Founded in 1949 by Bob Lassiter and Jim Moore, and joined shortly thereafter by Bill Van Allen, the firm set from the outset to practice business law near the businessmen and banks in uptown Charlotte and would not do personal injury work, insurance defense, or collections work. This business-first approach led it to become the largest in Charlotte by 1955 (though the headcount then was just five). Still with only 15 lawyers by the mid-1970s, MVA began a several-decade period of rapid growth through mergers and expansion, including opening a second office in Charlestown, SC, in 1997.
Banking & Business
Moore & Van Allen has become one of the largest law firms in the Southeast with a strong national reputation by creating value for its blue-chip clients—large national banks, successful international manufacturers, growing health care and technology companies, noted retailers, and more. The founding partners brought in several Charlotte giants, including the predecessor to Bank of America, and today the firm counts 7 of the 12 Fortune 500 companies headquartered in North Carolina as clients. Despite covering 20-plus practice areas, more than a quarter of the firm’s attorneys focus on financial services. They represent lenders of all types in financings for a broad range of transaction structures, including syndicated lending, mezzanine finance, real estate lending, project and equipment finance, subscription finance, asset-based lending, and structured finance.
New attorneys starting their careers at Moore & Van Allen have the unique opportunity to practice banking and business law in complex transactions that rival their New York competitors from the more laid-back environs of Charlotte. The firm’s Young Professionals initiative provides networking and business development opportunities for MVA’s Young Professionals and their colleagues through social and educational events, coaching, and a variety of ongoing communications. Young Professional events, include an annual March Madness social, a beer tasting, and a harvest festival.
