“Great work-life balance”
“Smart and creative attorneys”
“Aggressive attrition in the past year”
With more than 65 attorneys across five offices (three in California, one in New York City, one in Chicago), Michelman & Robinson, LLP (M&R) represents clients from an array of industries and with an impressive string of significant victories as of late.
Small Firm, Big Impact
Don't let size fool you. While M&R may be a smaller firm than many of its competitors, that hasn't stopped it from being a major contender for high profile work in a range of practice areas. Superstar partners and co-founders Sanford L. Michelman, a renowned litigator, and Mark B. Robinson, a sought after insurance lawyer, have added to their team at a steady pace, and their namesake firm boasts well-known appellate, class action & complex business litigation, corporate & securities, cybersecurity & privacy, environmental, intellectual property, labor & employment, real estate, regulatory, tax and white collar practice groups. And while M&R is West Coast based, it serves a global client base, including Fortune 500 companies, insurance-related entities, advertising and digital media firms, hotels and restaurants, financial institutions, high-tech and industrial enterprises, real-estate developers, government agencies, entrepreneurs in major and emerging industries, educational and philanthropic institutions, individuals and small and mid-sized businesses.
M&R is perhaps best known for its representation of insurance-related companies. Three of its long-time clients are now among the top 15 insurance brokers in the U.S., and the firm also works on behalf of insurers, reinsurers, private equity concerns and agents. M&R’s bread and butter in the insurance space falls under the regulatory umbrella. That being said, it also prides itself on handling mergers and acquisitions, litigation, employment and intellectual property matters for its insurance clientele.
Advertising and Digital Media Mavens
Advertising, creative and media-buying agencies, advertisers, media outlets, ad-tech companies, Internet publishers and other content providers rely on M&R to keep pace in an ever-changing advertising and digital media landscape. The attorneys in M&R’s Advertising & Digital Media Industry Group actively participate some of the market's preeminent events and trade associations, including the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Advertising Week and the Digital Place-based Advertising Association (DPAA), among others.
M&R has achieved recognition in the Golden State and beyond for its success in counseling, litigating and handling transactional matters in the hospitality industry. The firm’s Hospitality Industry Group is comprised of attorneys from several distinct practice areas—corporate, cybersecurity, labor & employment, real estate—with insight into the hospitality space. Together, they advise on day-to day operational issues, corporate governance, and business and employment disputes for hotels and restaurants.
Class Action Stars
M&R is known nationally for its complex litigation experience and class action prowess, successfully defending 50-plus major class actions in the past decade alone. The firm has successfully defended companies in a number of industries against class actions alleging unfair business practices, unfair competition and misappropriation of trade secrets, wrongful termination, and wage and hour and benefit violations.
IN THE NEWS
The Legal 500 ranked M&R’s Advertising and Digital Media Industry Group and Class Action, Commercial and Business Litigation Practice Group amongst the best in the U.S. This is the fourth consecutive year that the litigation practices have been named, and the first time that ADM has been included in the listing. The Legal 500, which analyzes the capabilities of law firms worldwide, also specifically identified the litigation prowess of Sanford Michelman, Todd Stitt, Mona Hanna and Jeff Farrow. The advice and counsel that Adam Solomon and Ron Camhi provide to advertising agencies, brands and ad-tech companies was acknowledged as well.
Los Angeles Business Journal named M&R’s Lara Shortz one of L.A.’s most influential women attorneys. The publication called Lara “a sought-after employment law practitioner, laser focused on the hospitality space” and noted her work as the firm’s new recruiting partner.
Best Lawyers Magazine named Mona Hanna as its "Lawyer of the Year" and Sanford Michelman, Dana Kravetz, Christopher D'Angelo, first time honoree Adam Solomon and Hanna were selected as "Best Lawyers." M&R was also recently ranked one of the Orange County Business Journal's Best Places to Work in Orange County—recognition that shines a bright light on the firm's workplace and culture.
Over the past few months, the ranks at M&R have gotten even bigger, as the firm added partner Scott Lyon, a cybersecurity guru, to its Orange County lineup, and its New York outlet has been boosted by the arrival of a group of lawyers formerly of Phillips Nizer: Jon Brooks, David Chidekel, David Pellegrino, Jeremy Richardson, Marc Zimmerman, and Kathryn Lundy. Brooke Haley joined M&R in the Big Apple as well. For its part, the firm's Los Angeles headquarters welcomed six new attorneys.
