“Quality of life”
“Not enough social interaction”
“New bonus structure”
Founded as a small-town, one-lawyer practice in New Jersey over 170 years ago, McCarter & English is now New Jersey’s oldest and one of its largest law firms. The firm has grown—both organically and strategically—to boast 400 lawyers in nine offices on the East Coast, including offices in Delaware, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Washington DC.
McCarter & English offers a full roster of legal services to Fortune 500, mid-cap, and emerging companies, including some of the nation’s leading financial, industrial, pharmaceutical, and commercial enterprises, as well as educational, health care, government and nonprofit institutions, and individuals.
Based in the Garden State
Founded in 1865 by Thomas Nesbitt McCarter, McCarter & English has been around long enough to boast inventor Thomas Edison and gunslinger Annie Oakley as clients.
Known for its health care, construction, and products liability litigation practices among others, McCarter has ranked as the Garden State’s “top law firm” according to New Jersey Business Magazine. In 2006, the firm expanded its life sciences department by merging with Boston-based Gadsby Hannah, adding to its “science team” a group of attorneys capable of assisting clients in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and health care fields.
The firm’s other departments have helped companies rebuild after computer data loss, regain pilfered trade secrets, and recover swindled funds. In the sports law arena, McCarter also helped a professional sports franchise client renegotiate pricing with a stadium contractor. The firm’s government contracts department has helped small business owners take advantage of federal small business administration programs. Internationally, the firm has helped settle a family business dispute that stretched from the U.S. to Germany to Israel.
Although its practices now have an international reach, the firm hasn’t forgotten its New Jersey roots. McCarter has been particularly involved in Newark’s community, for example, by assisting then-Mayor Cory Booker in organizing legal assistance programs designed to combat recent episodes of violence in the city.
A Firm with East Coast Connections
A legal team with public and private ties to the movers and shakers of New Jersey and beyond underpins the firm’s victories. A McCarter alum, former New Jersey State Senator Richard Bagger, moved on from the law firm to serve as Chief of Staff under New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. The firm also has financial connections. Former New Jersey state treasurer and member of the New Jersey State Assembly Banking Committee Michael Horn lends his financial experience to McCarter’s corporate, securities, and financial institutions departments.
