About Loeb & Loeb LLP

Storied California firm Loeb & Loeb’s primary claim to fame is its renowned Entertainment and Media Practice, though its multi-service offerings include nationally recognized practices in the areas of advertising and marketing, technology, trusts and estates, intellectual property, real estate, and nonprofit law. The firm is counsel to Fortune 500 companies and major players like, Google, Visa, Toyota, NCAA, Hoffmann-La Roche, T-Mobile, Bank of America, and Warner Music Group, as well as clients ranging from emerging companies to high-net-worth individuals and families.

From L.A. to Hong Kong

Loeb & Loeb’s century-plus history officially began in 1909 when brothers Edwin and Joseph Loeb founded their eponymous firm. Joseph Loeb also helped to found the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in a move that would set the tone for the firm’s future. Renowned movie studio Metro Goldwyn-Mayer was among the firm’s early clients, along with Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Union Bank of California. The firm remained only in California until Loeb & Loeb acquired its New York location through a 1986 merger with Hess Segal. Its expansion into Nashville in 1994 proved fruitful for its Music Industry and Entertainment and Media Practices. Chicago was next, with the 2003 acquisition of a five-lawyer IP boutique. The firm cemented its two decade-long presence in China with the 2009 opening of an office in Beijing, a move which jumpstarted the firm’s Asia and International practices. The same year saw the creation of the Washington DC office, a prime location to handle energy, regulatory, and transactional matters. The firm’s Asia practice later expanded with the addition of a Hong Kong office.

Today Loeb & Loeb’s Entertainment and Media practice continues to go strong, having been repeatedly recognized as “Law Firm of the Year” in Entertainment Law by U.S. News & World Report. The firm does well for itself overall, having been recognized by Law360 as a “California Powerhouse,” included on the National Law Journal’s “Intellectual Property Hot List,” and top-ranked by The Legal500 United States and The Best Lawyers in America in a variety of different practice categories.

Tinseltown Legal

Loeb & Loeb has provided entertainment, trusts and estates and intellectual property counsel to some of the world’s most recognized individuals and families, including directors Alfred Hitchcock and Woody Allen; music icons Johnny Cash, and Elvis Presley; Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry; boxer Muhammad Ali; publishing mogul William Randolph Hearst; the Getty family; hotelier Conrad Hilton; and the estates of J.R.R. Tolkien, Frank Sinatra, and Marilyn Monroe.

With a record like that, it’s no wonder Loeb & Loeb has the run of legal Hollywood with relationships with almost every major studio in Tinseltown—including Twentieth Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, DreamWorks, and MGM Studios and major industry organizations, including the Sundance Film Institute, the Recording Academy, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Beyond Hollywood

In addition to Loeb & Loeb’s extensive entertainment practice, the firm boasts one of the largest trusts and estates practices in the nation. In the high-profile probate battle of 2016, the firm served as lead trial counsel to Sumner Redstone—controlling shareholder of Viacom Inc. and CBS Corp.—securing a complete dismissal of the matter after just a single day in court. The firm’s nationally recognized real estate practice represents major commercial real estate landlords and tenants, property owners and developers on both coasts, handling the full range of transactions, as well as real estate litigation and land use matters. The team advised the landlord/property owner in a 1.2 million square-foot Midtown Manhattan lease for media giants 21st Century Fox and News Corp – one of the largest leasing deals in the market this year. The firm also has a deep legacy of pro bono service in the communities it serves. Loeb & Loeb was instrumental in overturning a 1981 redistricting plan by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors that discriminated against millions of Latino county residents, which allowed the subsequent election of the first Latina board member.
