About Lewis Roca Rothgerber Christie LLP
Lewis Roca is as Western as it gets, with nine offices throughout New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, and California. The firm’s clients range from entrepreneurs to Fortune 500 companies, and it operates on the motto “Experience Amplified,” which is meant to encompass the goal of delivering both exceptional legal services and positive client experiences.
Top Western Firms Combine
Lewis Roca’s history begins in 1950, when Lewis and Roca LLP was formed and quickly grew to operate out of offices in Phoenix, Tucson, Las Vegas, Reno, Albuquerque, and Silicon Valley. In 2013, the firm merged with Rothgerber Johnson & Lyons LLP, which was founded in 1903 and had offices in Denver and Colorado Springs. In 2016, the firm merged again, this time with Christie, Parker & Hale LLP, a California firm that brought its IP expertise into the mix.
You Have the Right to Remain Silent
Lewis Roca is a full-service firm with the ability to handle any type of corporate transaction or any stage of a dispute. Some of the firm’s practice groups certainly reflect its location out West, with specialties in Indian law, gaming, and environmental and natural resources. But the firm operates on a national basis, with groups like real estate, banking and regulatory compliance, and intellectual property serving clients from startup companies to Fortune 500 companies. Offering an interesting niche, the firm also has a Korean Business Team that navigates issues unique to Korean businesses operating in the U.S., such as regulatory compliance, licensing, corporate transactions, technology transfer, IP, and litigation.
Lewis Roca is also a heavy hitter when it comes to litigation. Most notably, the firm’s resume includes the pro bono representation of Ernesto Miranda in the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case, Miranda v. Arizona. This is the case that gave rise to Miranda Rights—i.e., rights of a criminal defendant to be informed of his or her rights to an attorney and against self-incrimination (“you have the right to remain silent…”). While not all of its cases have achieved quite the same level of fame, Lewis Roca has plenty of experience representing corporate clients in disputes related to contracts, business torts, securities, bankruptcy, and more.
All Kinds of Pro Bono
Miranda v. Arizona is just the beginning when it comes to Lewis Roca’s dedication to pro bono work. Recent matters the firm has handled as part of its pro bono practice include a Ninth Circuit case regarding the constitutional right to a Kosher diet, multiple death penalty cases, and immigration cases for asylum-seekers. As part of a local volunteer lawyers program, Lewis Roca attorneys staff a walk-in clinic 25 days out of the year. Attorneys who dedicate a certain number of hours each year to pro bono work are given an annual award and invited to the firm’s annual reception.
