About Lathrop GPM LLP
*In January 2020, Lathrop Gage LLP merged with Gray Plant Mooty to form Lathrop GPM. This profile is the legacy profile for Lathrop Gage.
Since its founding in 1873, Lathrop Gage LLP has grown to ten offices nationwide, from Los Angeles to Boston, helping the firm reach all their clients’ needs at the local, state, and national levels. The firm’s 320 attorneys specialize in providing corporate legal services in business transactions, employment and employee benefits, environmental, intellectual property and litigation.
Older and Wiser
Considered the oldest continuously operating law firm west of the Mississippi River, Lathrop Gage has a client roster that includes ongoing relationships that span more than 100 years. The firm was founded by Gardiner Lathrop, one of Kansas City’s first school board members and bar presidents, and John Gage, a “Reform Mayor” who drove the notorious Pendergast Machine. The firm’s founders met when Lathrop handed Gage his high school diploma after he had delivered the commencement address at his high school. Lathrop had already opened the firm in 1873 with William Smith, and when Gage opened his own in 1930, Lathrop took notice. The two firms did not unite until 1996, when the firms pooled together their 140 attorneys to begin the start of a litigation powerhouse.
Litigation Know How
Lathrop Gage is known for its robust litigation practice, which spans many areas. The firm handles such areas as business and complex commercial litigation, class actions, white collar defense, shareholder disputes, and trust and estates litigation, to name some.
The firm boasts strength in labor and employment, life sciences, and product liability and mass torts. It also has an active Trusts, Estates, & Legacy Planning team that provides estate and wealth planning for clients. This practice works in tandem with many of the firm’s other practices, including corporate, real estate, succession planning, tax, and more.
Focus on Project Management
Lathrop Gage was featured in a white paper by LegalBizDev on its strides with legal project management (“LPM”). Among the firm’s LPM efforts is a two-month coaching program that helps lawyers pinpoint steps they can take to maximize value for their clients and financials. The firm also has an LPM partner, who—according to the white paper—seeks to pinpoint inefficiencies and find solutions.
