Kasowitz Benson Torres LLP, has grown significantly since its founding in 1993, when it opened shop with just 18 attorneys. The firm now has close to 300 attorneys in ten offices across the U.S.
Litigators and then Some
In only a few decades, Kasowitz has become a powerhouse litigation shop focusing on complex commercial litigation. The firm's litigators are committed to pursuing creative, aggressive, and innovative approaches to its clients' challenging legal matters. Kasowitz's practice encompasses all areas of litigation, including antitrust, restructuring and bankruptcy litigation, employment litigation, government affairs, intellectual property, investigations and white collar defense, product liability litigation, real estate litigation, and securities litigation. Kasowitz's litigation successes have been recognized by such publications as Chambers, Benchmark Litigation, and The Legal 500. Powering the firm's litigation and trial experience is Founder and Managing Partner Marc E. Kasowitz, a trial attorney described by CNBC as the "toughest lawyer on Wall Street" and by Bloomberg Financial News as an "uberlitigator."
Among Kasowitz's big-name clients are AIG, Coach, Douglas Elliman, Google, TPG, Fairfax Financial, Harbinger Capital, Intercontinental Hotel Group, Levi-Strauss, Fortress Investment Group, J. Crew, NatGrid, and WeWork. In recent years, successful litigation matters have included representing MBIA in litigation relating to the company's $5 billion restructuring; a major automaker in antitrust actions against numerous suppliers; MF Global Holdings in a $3 billion malpractice action against PricewaterhouseCoopers; the State of Hawaii in an action alleging fraud and False Claims Act violations against a consulting company, stemming from an implementation of Oracle software for the State’s Department of Transportation; Federal Housing Finance Agency—the conservator for Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac—in actions asserting tens of billions of dollars of damages relating to mortgage-backed securities; and J. Crew in bankruptcy-related litigation.
Donald Trump has also been a client of the firm for more than 15 years. The firm represented Trump in the Trump University litigation, worked to keep Donald and Ivana Trump's divorce records sealed, and counseled the President in connection with the Mueller investigation.
While litigation is its main focus, the firm has a sizeable real estate transactional practice that handles matters relating to office, residential, lodging, gaming, shopping center, and mixed-use projects throughout the United States.
