Why Work at Jenner & Block?
At Jenner & Block, lawyers work in an environment distinguished by exceptional people, challenging work and a steadfast drive to develop superior talent. Now in our second century of service, we approach the practice of law not as a job, but as a calling to serve our clients, the profession and the community. Our culture demands dedication to excellence and ethics. While we have four offices across the United States and an office in London, we encourage all of our lawyers to enjoy strong camaraderie and teamwork across practice groups and offices.
Our firm and our lawyers are guided by several core values. We exceed client expectations while adhering to the highest ethical and professional standards. We serve the communities in which we live and work. We foster superior talent by providing opportunities for continuous learning and by promoting diversity and maintaining an inclusive environment where everyone feels respected and is able to contribute.
What We Do
We work on a variety of challenging assignments, from high-stakes, high-profile litigation and complex transactional deals for clients from a broad array of industries to pro bono cases that touch on a wide range of social issues and substantive areas of law.
Our litigators have won victories in complex and challenging civil and criminal cases in a wide range of areas at all levels of the federal and state judicial systems, in administrative tribunals and before arbitration panels including the American Arbitration Association, the International Chamber of Commerce and the London Court of International Arbitration. They do not just prepare cases for trial; they are trial lawyers. More than 80 percent of our litigation partners have tried a case to verdict.
Our Litigation Practice regularly receives recognition for our work on behalf of clients. For example, for 10 consecutive years, our lawyers have been named to The National Law Journal's “Appellate Hot List” of elite firms “with outstanding achievements before the US Supreme Court, federal circuit courts of appeal and state courts of last resort.” In 2019, Law360 named four firm practice groups in its annual "Practice Group of the Year" series: Appellate and Supreme Court, Benefits (ERISA Litigation), Energy and Food and Beverage.
Our internationally recognized Investigations, Compliance and Defense Practice is led by three former assistant US attorneys and an experienced investigations and white collar lawyer in London. The practice includes two former United States attorneys – one of them, Anton R. Valukas, served as the court-appointed examiner in the Lehman Brothers Bankruptcy, the largest bankruptcy in US history.

We also have substantial experience representing clients in complex corporate transactions, and we have counseled clients on some of the largest transactions in history. For example, we served as lead issuer’s counsel to General Motors in its historic US$23.1 billion initial public offering (IPO) – the largest IPO in history at the time. Transactional areas of focus include mergers and acquisitions; securities; corporate finance; corporate governance; private equity and hedge fund formation and investing; bankruptcy, workouts and corporate reorganizations; tax; real estate; environmental; and employee benefits and executive compensation. Clients range from Fortune 500 companies to middle-market and emerging companies and private equity and hedge funds to closely held and family businesses.
In addition to the GM IPO, other significant transactional engagements have included representing global defense contractor General Dynamics in numerous public offerings and acquisitions and divestitures including its recent $9.7 billion acquisition of CSRA; assisting US Foods in its US$1+ billion IPO; counseling Hertz in the US$2 billion spin-off of its equipment rental business; representing Fox Networks Group in the creation, launch and acquisitions of numerous television networks – including the Big Ten Network, Yankees Entertainment & Sports Network (YES Network) and Fox Sports San Diego – and in joint ventures for television networks, including the National Geographic channels and FX Canada; and taking the Chicago Board of Trade public.

Award-Winning Pro Bono and Public Service
Pro bono service is woven into the fabric of Jenner & Block. We are proud that The American Lawyer has ranked us the No. 1 pro bono firm in the United States nine times, most recently in 2015, and we have placed among the top 10 pro bono programs in the US every year since the AmLaw survey began in 1990. In 2018, our lawyers devoted 83, 190 hours to pro bono service.
What makes our pro bono program truly unique is its depth and breadth. Associates can select their own pro bono cases and work with a supervising lawyer of their choice. This allows for broad exposure to partners and areas of law and is an outstanding way for associates to gain experience quickly. Litigation associates routinely appear in court on pro bono matters, often within their first year of practice.
Examples of the types of pro bono cases we often undertake include state and federal criminal proceedings and appeals, prisoner rights cases, constitutional and civil rights litigation, habeas corpus proceedings, immigration and asylum cases, family law and domestic violence issues, human trafficking cases and death penalty cases, as well as landlord-tenant, public benefits and corporate matters on behalf of not-for-profits.

Talent Development at Jenner & Block
We strive to create and maintain an unrivaled environment for superior talent. Our goal is to help associates become the best lawyers they can be from the moment they join the firm. Our talent development and training programs are led by a partner who serves full-time as the firm's chief talent officer. A formal mentoring program helps all first-, second- and third-year associates integrate into the firm, learn the culture and develop the skills needed to advance.
Fourth-year associates participate in the firm’s Career Development Plan Program, which includes a formal advisor component.
In addition, many partners act as informal mentors to associates and junior partners.
It is expected that our lawyers will learn continuously, no matter how long they have been practicing. Partners are encouraged to not only participate in the firm’s extensive in-house and external CLE programs but also to give presentations and serve as in-house faculty. Many of our partners also teach courses at local law schools.

Diversity and Inclusion
Jenner & Block promotes diversity and inclusion within the firm, the profession, the community and society. Our actions reflect our deep-seated commitment to equality and social justice, as well as our belief that diverse teams arrive at better and more creative legal solutions. In keeping with our core values, we expect every individual in the firm to take personal responsibility for supporting diversity and fostering an inclusive environment. We hire and develop lawyers without regard to race, religion, national origin, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity.
Our efforts are guided by our Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Committee, which has existed for more than 20 years. The D&I Committee includes several senior partners and firm leaders and is chaired by a senior partner who is also a practice group leader and a member of the firm’s Policy Committee. The D&I Committee works closely with the firm’s Hiring Committee, the Talent Development team, the firm’s affinity groups and all firm departments. The D&I Committee reports regularly to the firm’s Management Committee on the firm’s diversity and inclusion initiatives. Additionally, our Associate Board of the D&I Committee provides a forum for associates to plan and execute our diversity and inclusion goals and programs. Among other things, the Associate Board hosts events such as small group dinners and themed receptions that promote inclusion and build relationships.
We have a robust team of professionals working on talent management, diversity and inclusion. A partner serves as the firm’s full-time chief talent officer. The firm also has an associate director of diversity and inclusion. Both serve as members of the D&I Committee. Working together with firm management, the chief talent officer and the associate director of diversity and inclusion help the firm develop and implement its goals and initiatives.
