What type of lawyer is Jenner & Block looking for?

At Jenner & Block, there is no particular "type" of lawyer.  Our team consists of a diverse group of professionals who share certain qualities and abilities and are committed to our core values of Excellence; Collaboration; Diversity and Inclusion; and Pro Bono and Community Service.  We value individuals with strong leadership abilities, exceptional communications skills and a desire to take the initiative and drive their careers.

What about associate compensation?

Incoming entry-level associates in the United States receive a base salary of $190,000 per year.  In addition to base pay, Jenner & Block has a generous and competitive merit-based bonus system.

What technology does Jenner & Block provide its lawyers?

We view technology as a key component of our overall strategy to provide innovative solutions to clients.  We also recognize that technology has become increasingly personal and understand the importance of ensuring that our lawyers are excited and satisfied by the tools they use.  To meet these challenges, we employ a virtual “desktop” solution that provides our lawyers with access to all of the firm’s technology from any device, from any place at any time.  This allows our lawyers to choose the hardware that best meets their personal needs, whether that be an Apple MacBook, a Windows laptop or a tablet such as the Microsoft Surface Pro.  We extend that element of choice to smartphones, providing our lawyers with a technology allowance so they may select from the most current devices on the market, including iPhones and Android devices.  We seamlessly integrate working outside the office into the daily routine.  Beyond personal technology, the firm has robust enterprise technology, including an intranet for internal communication, extranets that allow us to collaborate with clients and others outside the firm and video-conferencing capabilities that allow lawyers and staff to collaborate.

Why is Jenner & Block so popular with associates?

Jenner & Block associates enjoy a wide range of opportunities.  Associates work with some of the most accomplished lawyers – including prominent former US attorneys, Fellows of the American College of Trial Lawyers, former US Supreme Court law clerks and nationally recognized corporate dealmakers.  At Jenner & Block, we take great pride in fostering a collaborative learning environment between associates and partners.  Our goal is to give our associates the experience and resources needed to become great lawyers.  Development opportunities include a wide range of in-house CLE programs, on-the-job training, mentoring and more.

Why do law students speak so highly about Jenner & Block's summer program?

Our summer program allows lawyers and summer associates to work closely together.  More importantly, it provides an opportunity for summer associates to learn about the firm, work on matters and gain valuable insight into life at Jenner & Block.

Our summer program is designed to balance real-life professional experiences with networking and social events.  Among other things, our summer associates work on research and writing projects; participate in client meetings, negotiations and strategy sessions; attend court hearings and closings; observe depositions; and generally experience life as a junior associate.  We offer a comprehensive orientation program and regular in-house training programs on a range of subjects, including legal writing and other hands-on workshops.  Summer associates are encouraged to attend department meetings, firmwide monthly associate lunches and weekly lunch-and-learn sessions.

In addition, we offer a wide range of cultural and social programs that take full advantage of the museums, theaters, parks and sports available in the cities where our offices are located.  Participating in our summer program is a truly memorable experience.

Does Jenner & Block promote a diverse workforce?

We are committed to hiring and promoting a diverse workforce.  Our goal is to recruit the best lawyers and provide an environment where everyone has the opportunity to succeed and achieve their fullest potential.  To accomplish this, we hire and develop lawyers without regard to race, religion, national origin, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation or gender identity.

Our efforts are guided by our Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Committee, which has existed for more than 20 years. Our D&I Committee works closely with the firm’s Hiring Committee, the Talent Development team, the firm’s affinity groups and all firm departments.  The D&I Committee reports regularly to the firm’s Management Committee on the firm’s D&I initiatives. The D&I Committee includes several senior partners and firm leaders and is chaired by a senior partner who is also a practice group leader and a member of the firm’s Policy Committee. Additionally, our Associate Board of the D&I Committee provides a way for associates to participate in the planning and execution of our diversity and inclusion goals and programs.  Among other things, the Associate Board hosts events to promote inclusion and facilitate relationship building, such as small group dinners and themed receptions.

The firm has a robust team of professionals dedicated to talent management, diversity and inclusion.  A partner serves as the firm’s full-time chief talent officer.  The firm also has an associate director of diversity and inclusion.  Both serve as members of the D&I Committee.  Working together with firm management, the chief talent officer and associate director of diversity and inclusion help the firm develop and implement its goals and initiatives.

We work to make Jenner & Block a place where all lawyers are given the opportunity to succeed.  Among other initiatives, we sponsor events, participate on panels, conduct workshops and host visits with law student associations for diverse students.  The firm takes an active role at minority job fairs and other events for students and lawyers of color.  The talent management team and lawyers also work with law schools, professional organizations and pipeline programs in the community.

Our affinity groups play an important role in helping us create an inclusive and supportive environment.  We have seven affinity groups: African American Affinity Group, Asian Forum, Hispanic Lawyers Forum, LGBT Forum, the Multicultural Lawyers Affinity Group, the Veteran and Military Families Affinity Group, and the Women’s Forum.  We are in the process of revamping the Mothers Circle into a Caregivers Forum to become more inclusive. These groups provide a forum for lawyers of color, LGBT lawyers and women lawyers to come together and discuss professional development, networking, mentoring and other topics.

Jenner & Block’s commitment to diversity and inclusion is also reflected in our leadership.  People of color, women and LGBT partners serve on the firm’s Policy and Management Committees and lead practice groups. In 2019, the firm promoted six women and six men to the partnership ranks. Of those new partners, 75 percent identify as racially diverse or women.

What does it take to become a partner?

We have many programs and resources that help associates develop the skills needed to be a partner.  For example, we have a competency benchmark program that shows junior-, mid- and senior-level associates how they are progressing and identifies specific skills and experience that associates need to advance.  Associates receive extensive feedback throughout the year and at their annual review meeting.  We work with our associates to help them advance.  Typically, an associate is eligible for promotion to stipend partner after seven-and-a-half years of experience as a practicing lawyer.  After an additional three years, a stipend partner is eligible for promotion to equity partner.

Does Jenner & Block hire experienced lawyers?

Yes, we are always interested in hearing from excellent lateral associate candidates who are considering transitions.  We devote significant resources to helping laterals integrate quickly into the firm.  Interested lawyers should apply online through our website.

What kind of work can a first-year associate expect?

A first-year associate can expect to work on a variety of complex, cutting-edge matters.  In the Litigation Department, associates perform a wide range of research and writing assignments, including drafting substantive and often case-dispositive briefs for matters pending in the trial and appellate courts.  Associates participate in witness interviews, depositions and court hearings.  Many of our junior associates have the opportunity to participate in trial work, often through the extensive opportunities for pro bono work the firm sponsors and encourages.  In the Transactional Department, junior associates routinely participate in negotiations and drafting sessions and quickly become integral members of transactional teams.

Pro bono service is a core value at Jenner & Block.  We believe our pro bono program provides unmatched opportunities for associates to obtain hands-on training through significant courtroom and negotiation experience.  Every associate, regardless of practice area, is encouraged to seek out and work on a variety of pro bono matters of his or her choice, under the supervision of a partner of his or her choice.  The amount of pro bono work that the firm or our lawyers undertake is not limited.  Pro bono is not only a way to give back to the community, but it also provides associates with experience handling motions and taking a significant role in trials.  You never know where a pro bono case may take you.  For example, Partner Lindsay Harrison, as an associate, was given the experience of a lifetime in January 2009: she successfully took her pro bono matter, an immigration case, to the US Supreme Court.

Does the firm encourage continuing education?

One of our firm’s core values is to create an unrivaled environment for superior talent.  We believe continuous learning is essential at every level and that fostering superior talent is everyone’s responsibility.  Lawyers at Jenner & Block are committed to continuing to develop new skills.  We provide extensive resources to help all of our lawyers develop and learn.  First, we have a firmwide formal mentoring program for first-, second- and third-year associates.  The program is designed to help associates integrate into the firm, adapt to the firm's culture and develop the skills needed to advance.  Second, to help an associate target specific skills and assess his or her progress, the firm has created competency benchmarks in each department.  These benchmarks provide associates with a clear understanding of the skills and experience needed to progress and develop at Jenner & Block.  Third, we offer a broad range of internal and external CLE programs that include lectures, demonstrations and hands-on programs such as our annual Deposition and Motion Practice programs.  Finally, associates in their fourth year and above participate in the firm's Career Development Plan Program, which is designed to help mid- and senior-level associates focus on the attributes of successful partners including learning to manage, delegate and supervise others and develop business.
