About Ice Miller LLP

Ice Miller is a full-service law firm with more than 300 lawyers and more than 50 paraprofessionals in its offices in Illinois; Ohio; Indiana; New York; Pennsylvania; and Washington, DC.

What’s in a Name?

Ice Miller was founded in Indianapolis in 1910 by leading local attorney Frederick Matson, who stayed at the firm until 1941—long enough to see the firm undergo five name changes. It wasn’t until 2000, three years post-expansion to a second office in Chicago, that the firm changed its name to Ice Miller. In 2012, the firm experienced a growth spurt when it combined with the Ohio regional firm of Schottenstein Zox and Dunn Co., which added nearly 100 lawyers and new offices in the state. In 2017, Ice Miller opened its newest office in Philadelphia, marking its seventh office in the U.S.

Equipped to Adapt

Ice Miller has a loyal client base that includes many top businesses in the Midwest and nationwide. Some names you probably recognize include Baxter Healthcare, DaimlerChrysler Motors, Johnson & Johnson, McDonald’s, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., and The Coca-Cola Company. For those in the Midwest, you may also know clients Deere & Company (John Deere); Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams; Rockwell Automation; and multiple schools, like Indiana University, The Ohio State University, and Wabash College.

Included in its complete menu of legal practices, Ice Miller offers industry-focused groups that demonstrate the firm’s adaptation to societal and industry trends. For example, Ice Miller’s “Internet of Things” group works with municipal leaders looking to implement “smart city” infrastructure—in other words, using technology to create automated systems and efficiencies for city residents. To counsel clients in this emerging area of law, the firm leverages the experience of its attorneys with backgrounds in engineering, IT, data, and public affairs.

In another emerging and rapidly growing area of law, Ice Miller’s blockchain group works with clients looking to navigate the legal landscape that comes along with this new technology. As this area of law has developed, Ice Miller has worked with clients to assess the legal risks associated with the acquisition and sale of cryptocurrencies, aided startup ventures building blockchain technology, evaluated insurance coverage options related to cryptocurrency losses, addressed tax implications, and drafted and negotiated contracts for services that use blockchain.

Consulting Affiliates

In addition to traditional law firm services, Ice Miller offers several affiliate groups that provide consulting and project management services, among others. One such affiliate, Strategus LLC, assists clients through project financing and incentives procurement and management projects. Example projects include the relocation, expansion, or consolidation of operations or headquarters; mergers and acquisitions; investments in capital, R&D, and project infrastructure; workforce expansion and training; green project investment; and brownfield redevelopments. Another of Ice Miller’s affiliates, InfraSolutions LLC, provides consulting services for private-public partnerships (P3), public-public partnerships (P2), and other nontraditional project financing and delivery structures.
