Hueston Hennigan LLP is a litigation boutique composed of trial lawyers who specialize in high-stakes business disputes and white collar criminal defense. Although they are headquartered in Southern California, the firm has tried cases that have amassed to high-profile victories throughout the US and internationally.
Hitting the Ground Running
In January 2015, John Hueston and Brian Hennigan broke off from Irell & Manella to form Hueston Hennigan LLP, bringing along a few of the firm’s previous partners and grabbing partners from similar competitive firms. Within 24 hours, the firm had grown to more than 30 attorneys. Since then, Hueston Hennigan has rapidly established itself as a top litigation boutique, with high-profile clients including SpaceX, Tesla, State Bar of California, the Navajo Nation, Alec Baldwin, T-Mobile USA Inc., Sumner Redstone, and Walt Disney Co. The firm’s strong client base is due in part to attorneys’ attention to detail and client understanding, as the firm takes on all matters with the assumption they will be tried.
Although the firm may be young, its attorneys boast top-notch experience. Within the firm’s first year, John Hueston was named the California Lawyer of the Year for the second time in his career, after he secured a $5.15 billion post-trial settlement in Tronox Inc. v Anadarko Petroleum Corp.—the largest environmental settlement in U.S. history. Since its founding, Partner Robert Klieger has been named one of the top entertainment attorneys in the country by Variety, the Hollywood Reporter and Law360. The firm’s bench is routinely recognized for having top talent under age 40.
Bringing in Talent
Hueston Hennigan competes with BigLaw in attracted new talent: salaries are the same as at the top firms in L.A. and their bonuses are consistently above market. The firm also lures talented young attorneys by promising its associates at least one trial in their first two years and five trials by their fifth year, and has kept its word about giving young talent speaking roles at trials. The firm hires associates from top law schools and more than half of its attorneys previously served federal clerkships.

Prevailing on Behalf of the California State Bar
The State Bar prevailed in its fierce legal battle with its former Executive Director, Joseph Dunn, winning judgment on Dunn’s complaint alleging whistleblower retaliation and breach of the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing. Dunn had sought slightly more than $4 million for the whistleblower retaliation claim and at least $190,000 in severance for his claim of breach of implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing. John Hueston and Moez Kaba led the team from Hueston Hennigan LLP. Marshall Camp, Joe Reiter, and Varun Behl assisted with the case.
And the 2017 Class Is…
Hueston Hennigan announced the promotion of three senior associates to the position of counsel: Andrew Walsh, Padraic Foran, and Steven Feldman. With the promotions of Messrs. Feldman, Foran and Walsh, the firm inaugurates its annual selection of associates who are poised for partner consideration in the coming years. “We believe we are fortunate to have among the best associates in the nation, and Andrew, Pad and Steve are prime examples of that,” said managing partner, Brian Hennigan.

Mr. Romain comes from Williams & Connolly LLP in Washington, D.C., where he was a litigation partner since January 2007. Mr. Romain is consistently recognized as a celebrated and skilled litigator and trial lawyer, and he has more than 17 years’ experience in high-stakes complex civil and corporate litigation, securities litigation and enforcement, and white-collar criminal defense.
