About Honigman LLP
Honigman is the largest law firm in metro Detroit and one of the largest law firms headquartered in Michigan, with more than 300 lawyers operating out of six offices in the Wolverine State, as well as offices in Chicago and Washington, DC. The firm attorneys work in more than 60 practice areas, from advertising to zoning, and serve clients locally, nationally, and internationally.
Formed in 1948 by Russian immigrant Jason Honigman and Baltimorean Jack Miller, the firm’s headquarters in Detroit is located in the First National Building in the heart of the city. Honigman would go on to serve as CEO of a supermarket chain, chairman of a stamp company, and president of mortgage firm. Miller practiced at Honigman until his death in 2007 at the age of 94, primarily in business litigation, but he also headed the firm’s family law practice and represented many of the city’s social elite, including Henry Ford II in his 1980 divorce. In 2015, Honigman merged with Chicago litigation boutique Schopff & Weiss.
Science & Art
A full-service firm, Honigman has particular expertise in the life sciences space, where the firm regularly represents pharmaceutical companies in patent disputes and other matters. Honigman litigators handled the very first inter partes review trials before the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board in the pharmaceutical context. The firm provides legal and strategic guidance to drug companies as they go through clinical development and ultimately seek FDA approval. The IP team at Honigman is regularly recognized as one of the best in Michigan by Chambers and other trade publications
For more than three decades, Honigman has served as the outside general counsel to the Detroit Institute of Arts—a wing of the museum is even named for one of the firm’s founding partners, Alan Shwartz. The firm played a significant role in negotiating the museum’s operating agreement with the city of Detroit; its expansion and renovation in the last 2000s; and helped it navigate the city’s bankruptcy, protecting the art collection from being used to satisfy the city’s debts.
For the Kids
While all large firms tout their pro bono programs, Honigman has found unique ways to give back to its community. The firm founded the “Honigman Academy,” an educational program that provides Detroit high school students with a broad overview of life at a corporate law firm. The firm has also partnered with TutorMate, and more than 70 firm attorneys and staff volunteer to tutor first and second grade students in Detroit, Grand Rapids, and Chicago to improve literacy for at-risk students.
