Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd may have been started as a solo practice in 1887 by Harry J. Haynsworth, but the firm soon became a family practice after Haynsworth’s son, and then grandson, joined. In the past century, the firm has merged twice and gone through several name changes, the final one in 2001 which resulted in the present Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd. Since its beginnings in Greensville, South Carolina, the practice has grown to a full-service law firm with six offices across North and South Carolina and specializes in the arenas of law, commerce, technology, insurance, education, healthcare, government and public relations.
Although Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd represents national clients such as CVS Corporation, Marriot Corporation and DuPont, it has also stayed true to its roots, representing the cities of Charleston, North Charleston and Sumter, South Carolina as well as community building initiatives like the South Carolina Jobs-Economic Development Authority.
Environmental law isn’t just one of the firm’s practice areas, preservation and conservation is a key aspect of Haynsworth Sinkler Boyd’s culture. In fact, the firm made a pledge to reduce consumption and promote conservation across all of its offices by using energy efficient LCD monitors and energy efficient light bulbs, setting timers to regulate the lights, heating system, and cooling systems to reduce energy consumption, among other green practices.
HSB has earned many accolades for its rigorous practice in the Carolinas. The firm was named a top business and litigation law firm in its home of South Carolina by Chambers USA. The firm’s attorneys have also gained a lot of recognition, most recently when 35 of the firm’s lawyers in South Carolina were singled out by Super Lawyers, with 12 of them as “Rising Stars.” The firm’s lawyers are regularly distinguished in the legal community, especially since many of them have held leadership positions within state and national organizations as well as members of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American College of Real Estate of Lawyers, among others.
