Who Needs the Big Apple?
HSE was founded in Upstate New York by James Havens and Nathaniel Foote back in 1894 and has made a comfortable and successful home for itself. HSE was so comfortable in Rochester that it took nearly a hundred years for the firm to take its first steps outside of it. Its first additional office, in Naples, Florida in 1981, was its farthest. After that, HSE stuck with New York, opening offices in Albany in 1989, Buffalo in 1995, and Corning and New York City in 2014.
Today HSE boasts more than 125 lawyers across New York. The firm has ranked among U.S. News Best Lawyers “Best Law Firms” Tier 1 metropolitan rankings in Western New York for nine years. Firm attorneys have also been recognized by Best Lawyers in America; Upstate New York Super Lawyers; Upstate New York Rising Stars; and the “Legal Elite” list by Buffalo Business First and the Buffalo Law Journal.
Picture This Friendship
Harter Secrest and Eastman Kodak go way back. HSE’s founder was friends with Eastman Kodak’s founder and eventually left the firm to join Eastman Kodak as general counsel and later vice president. The firm has stood by the photo and technology company throughout, guiding it through sales of operations, businesses, assets in silver, light film, imaging technology, micrographics, photo kiosks, and software.
MVP of Western New York
HSE’s sports law and sports facilities practice has experience in a variety of sports-management and sports-facilities-related matters, including employment, land use, zoning, litigation, construction law, and more. Among the teams the firm has counseled include the Buffalo Bills, the Buffalo Sabres, the Rochester Red Wings, the Syracuse Chiefs, and the Rochester Knighthawks, to name some. The firm has also been involved in disputes regarding construction of sports arenas and has seen synergies between its corporate and real estate departments as they work on matters regarding golf course development.
Harter Secrest & Emery LLP Diversity Scholarship
Since 2005, HSE has offered a diversity scholarship annually to a first-year law student. The recipient is chosen based on a variety of factors that “indicate promise for a successful career in the legal profession.” In addition to receiving $7,500 toward tuition, the recipient also earns a spot as a summer associate at the firm.
IN THE NEWS
The firm continues to expand its footprint in Buffalo where HSE now has 30 attorneys. In 2018, HSE welcomed 13 attorneys to its Buffalo office including partners with trademark, patent litigation, patent prosecution, business litigation, and insurance litigation practices, as well as senior associates from large markets and prestigious law firms.
HSE Partner and Founder of the government and internal investigations practice group, Brian M. Feldman, was selected by the New York Law Journal as a recipient of the Rising Stars award for 2018. Feldman was among fewer than thirty recipients and is the only winner selected who is based outside of New York City. The judging panel selected “lawyers who have wielded influence in their practice areas in New York and beyond.” Feldman launched the firm’s government and internal investigations practice group in 2013. He represents clients in criminal, civil fraud, and regulatory investigations, and he conducts internal investigations to guide organizations through crisis situations. His experience includes investigations in health care, education, and other regulated areas, and litigation under the False Claims Act and similar fraud statutes. Feldman’s clients range from individuals and not-for-profit organizations to Fortune 500 companies.
Harter Secrest & Emery’s securities and capital markets team helped a client become the first Jordanian company to be listed on a major U.S. stock exchange. Jerash Holdings (US), Inc. (NASDAQ: JRSH) began trading its common stock in the Nasdaq Capital Market in May of 2018. Jerash is a producer of high-quality textile goods for leading global brands and well-known retailers such as Columbia and Land’s End and the owners of such brands as Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger. HSE began working with Jerash in the summer of 2016, representing the company in a successful private offering. From there, the firm began the SEC registration process, creating the foundation for an eventual Initial Public Offering (IPO). As part of the lead-up to the IPO, the HSE attorneys assisted Jerash in creating and preparing for its road show presentations to potential investors in Jerash’s home country of Jordan, as well as Hong Kong, mainland China, and New York City.
For the second year in a row, HSE Managing Partner Craig S. Wittlin—a corporate and mergers & acquisitions lawyer—is the only attorney in Upstate New York in any practice area to be recognized by Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers in Business as an Eminent Practitioner. Eminent Practitioners are highly influential lawyers in a particular practice area who are recognized for their key role in both management and client relationship duties. As the firm’s Managing Partner, Wittlin continues to maintain a very high profile and active corporate and M&A practice.
