About Gray Reed
Gray Reed is a full-service, Texas-based law firm with three offices in the Lone Star State and more than 150 attorneys. The firm's dedication to its clients across dozens of practice areas has led to repeat clients and word-of-mouth referrals since its founding in 1985.
A Home Run
In 1985, seven Texas lawyers joined forces, leaving their large law firm behind to form Gray Reed in Houston. The firm’s reputation took off quickly, but it was built on more than just legal prowess: The firm’s softball team won the State Lawyers League softball tournament in 1986, and it proved to be good PR for the new firm. The following year, the Texas Lawyer featured Gray Reed on the front page, noting that the firm stood out as a "Little Big Firm” in both the Texas legal and softball worlds. The firm quickly expanded to open a Dallas office in 1990. Most recently, the firm set up shop in Waco to accommodate an influx of IP litigation work in the Western District of Texas, opening its new office doors in 2020.
Lone Star Leaders
Gray Reed has 30 organized practice groups including a full range of transactional and litigation services, tax, trusts and estates, employment law, family law, intellectual property and bankruptcy. The firm has strong representation in five industries, including agriculture, construction, energy, health care, and real estate. Gray Reed’s clients praise the firm for efficiently staffing matters, giving associates the opportunity to work alongside experienced attorneys for clients like Texas Health Resources, ConocoPhillips, Sherwin-Williams, Frost Bank, Jani-King, Domino’s Pizza, and Perry Homes.
Gray Reed lawyers are groomed to be subject-matter authorities in the law and masters of business trends, strategies and principles. Thirty-two lawyers are Board Certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in areas of law that are important to the firm’s clients. And the firm’s reach goes well beyond state lines—Gray Reed lawyers are licensed to practice in 22 states. The firm is also a member of the Lexwork International and Lawyers Associated Worldwide networks, so Gray Reed can provide access to legal resources in over 75 countries across the globe.
A Career Firm
Many Gray Reed attorneys have worked at the firm for their entire legal careers, and the firm boasts a 93 percent attorney retention rate. Firm leadership is dedicated to fostering an environment where lawyers want to stay—seeking to attract lawyers with “complementary strengths and values.” The firm also supports lawyers through early hands-on experience, so newer attorneys can quickly develop their skills with the support of those more experienced. This all adds up to a culture where attorneys want to stay—the firm is consistently ranked a “Best Place to Work” by the Houston Business Journal and the Dallas Business Journal.
By June 2021, we are largely fully returned to a normal work environment and are operating a traditional summer associate program.
