About Faegre Baker Daniels LLP
In early 2012, Minnesota-based Faegre Benson joined with Indianapolis firm Baker & Daniels to form Faegre Baker Daniels, a 770-attorney firm with more than 20 practice areas.
Founded by Grover Cleveland's #2
Baker & Daniels was founded in Indianapolis in 1863, by Thomas Hendricks (future governor of Indiana and vice president to Grover Cleveland) and former Indiana Attorney General Oscar Hord. The firm stayed put in Indiana for more than a century until the 1970s when it launched its first branch office in Washington, DC. Over the next few decades Baker & Daniels opened several more offices in Indiana and launched a trio of consulting businesses in DC, which the firm consolidated into B&D Consulting in 2006.
Through offices in Qingdao and Beijing, Baker & Daniels ushered companies like Lucent Technologies and Volvo Financial into the Chinese market. International credibility aside, Baker & Daniels remained one of Indiana's premier local firms, ranking high regionally in employment, litigation, M&A and real estate services. In addition to those more quotidian practices, the firm also built solid departments in less traditional fields like sports and entertainment and life sciences, as well as developed a subspecialty in representing faith-based institutions like Christian colleges.
Rocky Mountain Rivals
After starting in Minnesota in 1886 as Cobb & Wheelwright, the firm that would become Faegre Benson was soon joined by John Faegre and John Benson, former college football rivals. Starting in 1959, the firm launched a concerted effort to grow and recruited more lawyers. Over the next few decades, Faegre Benson introduced new practice areas including health care, intellectual property and mass tort. In 1995, Faegre Benson opened an office in London, and in 2001 it launched a practice in Shanghai.
Before the merger, Faegre Benson was already one of the biggest firms in the Rocky Mountain region, boasting clients like American Express, Target Corporation, General Mills, Capital One and the Novartis Corporation. The firm had also built a reputation for handling complex transactions and litigation work in the medical technology, software, pharmaceuticals, financial services and agribusiness arenas.
In January 2012, Baker & Daniels and Faegre Benson merged to become Faegre Baker Daniels. As part of the merger, B&D Consulting became FaegreBD Consulting. The combined firm has 13 offices throughout the U.S., as well as in China and England, and employs about 770 lawyers and 45 consultants. The firm's broad range of practice areas includes corporate, litigation and tax, as well as specialty areas like wealth management, client technology solutions and environmental law.
