About Faegre Baker Daniels LLP

On February 1, 2020, Faegre Baker Daniels combined with Drinker Biddle & Reath to become Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP (Faegre Drinker). This is the legacy Faegre Baker Daniels profile.

Faegre Baker Daniels is a global law firm with Midwest roots and a storied history. Lawyers throughout the firm’s 150+ years have gone on to a variety of noble endeavors, such as judgeships, corporate leadership, Notre Dame athletic directorship, and Vice President of the United States. Though Faegre Baker Daniels today has international clout, its strongest ties are still right where it started—the heart of the Midwest.

Founded by American Leaders

Faegre Baker Daniels history began in 1863 when Thomas Hendricks (who went on to become Vice President to Grover Cleveland) and Oscar Hord (later to become Indiana Attorney General) formed Hendricks & Hord—the firm that would later become the “Baker Daniels” half of Faegre Baker Daniels. Meanwhile, the eventual “Faegre” half of the firm opened its doors in Minneapolis in 1886 under the name Cobb & Wheelwright. After more than a century of countless name changes, the firm became Faegre Baker Daniels in 2012. Though its roots stay strong in the Midwest, Faegre Baker Daniels has a global reach with offices in Beijing, Shanghai, and London.

From Commodities to Cryptocurrency

Faegre Baker Daniels is a full-service international law firm with a wide array of corporate and litigation practices, but certain specialties really set the firm apart. When it comes to food and agribusiness, Faegre Baker Daniels is an industry leader. In addition to its role as a regulatory and business advisor to top companies in the industry, the firm has provided representation in high-stakes litigation, including multidistrict cases and class actions. The firm is also at the forefront of the technology industry with its expertise in blockchain and digital currency and extensive knowledge of software and robot installation. Faegre Baker Daniels also touts its strength in the energy, health, and financial service industries.

Faegre Baker Daniel's impressive portfolio of cases and clients traces back to the firm’s early years. The firm’s first case to wind up in the U.S. Supreme Court was Strait Manufacturing v. Crescent Milling Company in 1912. In the 1990s, the firm served as lead counsel in the Exxon Valdez oil spill trial, which resulted in a $1 billion verdict. On the transactional side, the firm represented the City of Indianapolis in the sale of Indianapolis Water and its wastewater system to Citizens Energy Group—one of the largest municipal acquisitions in history.

In addition to its legal services, the firm’s consulting division—Faegre Baker Daniels Consulting—was established in 1985. The consulting division advises clients on public policy, regulatory, communications, and coalition management strategies, and consists of approximately 50 consultants located in Washington, DC; Chicago; and Indianapolis.
