Pittsburgh-based Cohen & Grigsby was founded in 1981 when Charles Cohen and a group of nine other lawyers (all but one of whom were former colleagues at Reed Smith) left BigLaw behind to launch a new firm: Manion Alder & Cohen. In Cohen’s words, the firm would be “more entrepreneurial.” Robert Grigsby, an Allegheny county court judge, joined in 1985, and the firm adopted its current name, Cohen & Grigsby.
Performance Equals Results
Cohen & Grigsby brands itself as having a “Culture of Performance®.” According to the firm, this means “achieving optimal results” for clients rather than focusing on the billable hour. The firm offers expertise across four client service sectors: Business Transactions, Corporate Litigation, Workforce Solutions, and Private Wealth Management. Its efforts have been recognized by such publications as Best Lawyers, Florida Super Lawyers, Pennsylvania Super Lawyers, and U.S. News.
The firm also thrives on collaboration, highly valuing associate input. Directors and associates work together in developing training for the firm’s in-house CLE program: C&G Academy as well as providing input to the Talent Management Team, which provides non-legal training.
Cohen & Grigsby has deep roots in Pittsburgh and prides itself in its involvement in the area’s development over the past few decades. The firm represents a long list of local clients, ranging from emerging and institutional businesses, developers, individuals, and nonprofit organizations. And attorneys are encouraged to become involved in local organizations and pro bono efforts. Many of the firm’s associates and partners sit on local nonprofit boards.
The firm is unique in its commitment to maintaining a palette of interests outside law. Cohen & Grigsby features its own art gallery, the C&G Gallery, in the front reception area of its offices. The gallery displays artwork from local Pittsburgh artists as well as international artists. It also partners with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust for its Cohen & Grigsby Trust Presents Series, which brings live music and entertainment acts to Pittsburgh.
