About Carlsmith Ball LLP
Founded in 1857, Carlsmith Ball is Hawaii’s oldest law firm and is steeped in Hawaii’s history. The firm was founded as the solo practice of David H. Hitchcock, who was later joined by Carl S. Carlsmith. The firm has grown from a solo practice with one office in Hilo, Hawaii to an international law firm of nearly 100 attorneys with four offices across Hawaii, an office in Los Angeles and one in Guam. As the largest law firm in Hawaii, the firm has acquired a roster of clients that include Fortune 500 companies; small and mid-size corporations; banks; international, federal, state, and local governments; and individuals.
Ahead of its Time
Carlsmith Ball established itself as a forward-thinking firm when in 1888, the firm employed the first woman attorney in the entire state of Hawaii, who also happened to be the daughter of the firm’s founder, David H. Hitchcock. Not only that, but the firm has been at the forefront of legal services in the Pacific and U.S. Mainland, providing legal services to Hawaii’s first condominium project. Today, the firm’s areas of expertise have expanded to include real estate, land development, banking, foreign investment and litigation.
Getting Some Sun Shined on Them
The firm’s reputation extends beyond the Aloha State. U.S. News and The Best Lawyers in America® listed the firm in Tier 1 in 15 practice areas and 27 Carlsmith Ball attorneys were listed in the 2015 edition of The Best Lawyers in America®. Chambers and Partners USA ranked Carlsmith Ball as one of America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, calling the firm as “strong across the board.” The firm’s accolades don’t stop there; because of the attorney’s constant help in assisting organizations with limited funding, Carlsmith Ball was awarded the Leadership Circle Recognition Award at the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii’s 65th Anniversary Gala.
