“Very Solid Middle of the Road Firm”

Good work-life balance, and not much pressure to bill high hours. Easier to advance from associate to counsel than at most big firms. Usually a decent shot of making shareholder as well. The people are friendly and collegial, definitely no overly competitive associates here. The work is distributed well and evenly, and high performers are rewarded a little bit more with confidential pay bumps and bonuses. There are some very smart attorneys here, and the high performers are world class. Very big push towards transparency with financials and goal, which are shared with all associates.

Below market pay in most offices. The firm is positioned on the low end of the big firm market, which makes it easy to pitch cases but hard to compensate attorneys. The average hours billed is very low for big firm standards, which hurts profitability and bonuses. Old technology, and a stodgy mentality because of its Pittsburgh base. Some satellite offices feel disengaged. Very little willingness to experiment with alternate fee structures.

Advice to Candidates

Personality matters, and the firm prides itself on having personable smart attorneys. This is not a place that gives high bonuses, so make sure you negotiate a good starting salary. Overall a very solid place to work, especially if you're looking to start a family and want a firm that understands and gives you flexibility.
