About Bodman

Bodman has deep roots in the Motor City.  Formed by in-house attorneys at Ford Motor in 1927, today Bodman is considered one of Detroit's top firms, and its practices run the gamut, including banking, business, construction, intellectual property, municipal law and finance, real estate and tax.

Goodbye Ford, Hello Bodman

The year the Model T made its first appearance, Wallace Middleton and Clifford Longley, two in-house attorneys at the Ford Motor Company, bid adieu to Mr. Ford to form their own law firm. The parting was apparently on good terms, as the firm has represented the Ford family since 1929. Henry Bodman, the firm's namesake, was an attorney for the Packard Motor Car Company before joining the practice early in its history. In 1933, the firm helped found the Manufacturers National Bank of Detroit and has since represented the institution, which became Comerica Incorporated.

Today, while maintaining its base in Detroit, the firm has branched out to other Michigan locales including Ann Arbor, Cheboygan and Troy. The firm has a wide-ranging client roster that keeps growing, including the Archdiocese of Detroit, Bank of America, CBS Outdoor, Cheboygan Memorial Hospital, Citizens Bank, the city of Ann Arbor, Comcast Cablevision and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, to name a few.

Serving Michigan Since 1927

Bodman is also strong in municipal matters and public financing, as evidenced by its work for the downtown Detroit Stadium project. Once the stadium was built, the firm stayed in the game by helping the NFL enforce its trademarks and prevent the sale of counterfeit merchandise at the stadium. As if helping erect the home of the Detroit Lions wasn't enough for the inhabitants of the Great Lakes state, Bodman also served as bond counsel to the state of Michigan in its issuance of one-year notes to fund general operating and education expenses.

Changing with the Times

As Bodman has grown and expanded through Michigan, the firm has adapted with the times as well. In response to the environmental crisis, the firm has recycled 40 tons of office paper since the initiation of their own recycling program in March 2009. U.S. News ranks the firm as a leader in Detroit in the banking and finance, commercial litigation, corporate law, employment law, environmental litigation and real estate law arenas. In 2016, Benchmark Litigation named Bodman as the Michigan Firm of the Year and The Best Lawyers in America named eight Bodman attorneys as 2016’s “Lawyers of the Year.”
