Young California law firm Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo was founded by Steven J. Andelson, Steven D. Atkinson and Ronald C. Ruud in 1979. The firm’s 140 attorneys represent educational institutions, government agencies, grocery chains, municipal organizations, Chinese-language newspapers and construction corporations in its specialty areas of education, employment and construction litigation.

Emphasis on Employment

Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo has litigated cases on issues of age and race discrimination, employer liability and negligence, sexual harassment and internet abuse for clients like school boards, Fortune 500 companies and the National Labor Relations Board. The firm regularly receives both national and regional awards and honors. It was named to the National Law Journal’s2011 “Hot List” as one of 20 top midsize firms in the country, and its highly respected construction practice was recognized in Chambers 2012 rankings. Atkinson, Andelson, Loya, Ruud & Romo was named the most diverse law firm in California by California Lawyer magazine, beating out larger law firms in California for the top spot. Exactly one third of the firm’s equity partners are minorities, and several of the firm’s attorneys and staff are bilingual.  

FRISK-y Business

One of the firm’s founding name partners, Steven J. Andelson, developed the FRISK Documentation Model, a widely-used template which provides employers in the public sector, particularly education, with guidelines and advice on how to address and improve employee performance. The model focuses on the process being progressive, corrective and positive for the employee. Andelson also authored the National Labor Relations Board Procedures and Practices with Reference to the Educational Employment Relations Act.
