About Berkshire Hathaway
Led by iconic investing guru Warren Buffet, Berkshire Hathaway is a household-name holding company that provides insurance, real estate, investment, energy, transportation, manufacturing, and many other services and products through its numerous subsidiaries. CEO and founder Buffet, widely known as the “Oracle of Omaha,” is one of the most successful investors in modern history, and his company owns over 60 other firms. Buffet, now in his 90s, bought his first stock when he was just 11 years old, a spark that’s helped forge a wildfire of business success.
GEICO, Berkshire Hathaway Reinsurance Group, and McLane Company, among others, are all segments of Buffet’s successful holding company. Duracell, Dairy Queen, and Fruit of the Loom are also owned by the massive Buffet empire. What makes Berkshire Hathaway unique is its master investor knows how to make a pretty penny —and doesn’t shy away from giving it away as well. Buffett has promised to donate over 99 percent of his wealth to charitable causes, and has already given upwards of $41 billion to charitable causes, including a significant amount to the Gates Foundation. Buffet and technology mogul Bill Gates have been close friends for more than three decades, and together he and Gates created the Giving Pledge, asking billionaires to donate at least 50 percent of their wealth to charitable causes.
As for the wealth amassed by Berkshire Hathaway, it’s not hoarded by its executive team in any respect. In addition toits many charitable donations, the company gives back to employees in unique and fun ways. Since 2016, its famous employee NCAA Basketball Tournament Bracket Contest has been a firmwide activity that builds community and fosters a little healthy competition among employees. The winner of the contest wins, at minimum, $100,000 dollars, and if an employee picks the winner of every game correctly, they win $1 million dollars. Buffet may have created one of the most profitable business empires to date, but his interest in keeping that profit is minimal. He’s created a company that works hard to give back, and creates a community that is strong and united.
