About Altaba Inc.

Altaba Inc. is stocked with stock — and that's about all. The company (formerly Yahoo Inc.) is a publicly traded, closed-end management investment which tracks the shares of Alibaba Group Holding Co., an online retailer based in China, and Yahoo Japan Corp., an internet company based in Japan. Altaba is the spinoff of the Yahoo assets that were left after Verizon Communications bought Yahoo's operating business for $4.4 billion in 2017.

Altaba Inc. has some $64 billion worth of assets. About 60% comes from its ownership in Alibaba Group Holding Co. with another 22% from its ownership in Yahoo Japan Corp. The rest of the asset value is from ownership in Excalibur Rights, which owns intellectual property from Yahoo, and several minority investments. Altaba also is responsible for shareholder litigation that might grow out of two Yahoo hacking incidents that exposed users' information.

Company Background

Yahoo made many acquisitions over the years, but perhaps the most value was its investment in Alibaba, the China-based online merchant. As Yahoo's online information and entertainment stagnated, the Alibaba shares appreciated it value. Yahoo bought 40% of Alibaba for $1 billion in 2005, but sold half of its shares back to Alibaba in 2012. When Verizon bought Yahoo's operating business – the web site, news, flickr, email, Tumblr, and the other operations, what was left was Yahoo's shares in Alibaba Group Holding Co. Those shares along with shares of Yahoo Japan Corp. became the assets of Altaba.
