About Pinterest

Pinterest sparks inspiration. “Oh, I saw it on Pinterest” is becoming a more and more common phrase when talking about our latest ideas and projects. Pinterest was founded by Ben Silbermann, Evan Sharp, and Paul Sciarra in March 2010. The website provides a virtual bulletin board that users can fill with just about anything, from recipes to couture fashion photos. The website allows users to create their own boards as well as follow others, fostering a hub of creativity and collaboration. Pinterest is one of the largest social media networks in the world, counting by global active users—Pinterest clocks in at 459 million per month. These users log onto Pinterest to help in creating new projects, finding a new hairstyle, attempting better communication, painting a picture, or just about anything else creative.

When someone posts on Pinterest, it’s called a Pin. There are over 200 billion Pins on Pinterest and counting. One of the most popular features outside of creating Pinterest Boards is the homepage. Pinterest’s homepage fills with content as your scroll, and its algorithm customizes it for each user so they can find exactly what they are looking for. From here, users can re-pin what they see onto their own boards, making for a platform that’s built on community. However, Pinterest doesn’t just run on user-generated action and content; it predicts trends itself, so everything from aesthetics to fitness is up to date on the site. In 2020, 8 out of 10 trend predictions turned out to be correct despite 2020 being a wildly unpredictable year.

Pinterest has a clear vision: to foster creativity and community between people near and far. The platform is simple, but constantly evolving as style, aesthetics, trends, and culture evolve as well.
