Mediacom Communications offers cable, internet, and digital phone service throughout smaller markets in more than 20 mostly Midwestern and Southern states. Its core markets include areas in Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri. Mediacom serves residential and small to midsized business customers. The company operates through Mediacom LLC and Mediacom Broadband. Together the subsidiaries count some 821,000 video customers, more than a 1.2 high-speed data (HSD) customers, and 564,000 phone customers. It also sells advertising time to local, regional and national advertisers under the OnMedia brand.
Video accounts for more than 40% of Mediacom’s revenue, followed by HSD with 35%, business services at about 15%, phone, more than 5%, and advertising, less than 5%.
Medicom provides services to more than 1,500 communities in more than 20 US states, including in Georgia, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri.
Sales and Marketing
Mediacom’s sales channels include outbound telemarketing, direct mail, in-bound customer care centers, retail locations, door-to-door field technician sales, and an e-commerce site. Mediacom Business has a dedicated sales force and outbound telemarketing, and has several relationships with third-party agents who sell services. Xtream is the company’s marketing brand for bundled packages that include video with DVR service and set-tops with the TiVo guide, HSD with a wireless gateway, and phone service.
Mediacom’s revenue has grown steadily at a 3% rate over the past five years.
In 2017, revenue rose 2.5% to $1.06 billion from $1.03 billion in 2017. HSD jumped 10% and Business Services increased 9% in 2018 from 2017 while video revenue slipped about 2%.
Higher depreciation and amortization and service costs cut profit to $159.2 million in 2017 from $171.9 million in 2016.
Mediacom’s cash holdings stood at $12.6 million for 2017 compared to $14.2 million for 2016. The company’s operating activities generated $325.2 million in 2017 while investing activities used $179.2 million and financing activities used $147.7 million.
Mediacom has engaged in a $1 billion capital spending campaign to build out and improve its network in its service areas. The company’s Project Gigabit is a wide-scale deployment of technology 1 Gbps downstream HSD service to almost all the home passed by MCC. Another program, Project Open Road, was designed to connect more than 70,000 new commercial locations in MCC’s footprint that contain multiple potential customers to accelerate Business Services sales.
A factor that could limit Mediacom’s flexibility in growth strategies is its $1.6 billion in debt. Debt payments draw off significant amounts of cash, leaving less available to finance operations and capital expenditures.
Mediacom also faces challenges from its lack wireless phone service, which competitors can offer as part of a bundle of services.
The company's fiber optic cable enables it to compete against larger carriers in offering the highest speeds for internet service in some markets.
