LinkedIn is a well-known professional networking website with a high employee satisfaction rate
LinkedIn helps people connect to other people in the business world. The firm operates an online professional network designed to help members find jobs, connect with other professionals, and locate business opportunities. The site has grown to reach more than 500 million users in some 200 countries since its launch in 2003. LinkedIn is free to join; it offers a paid premium membership with additional tools and sells advertising. It additionally earns revenue through its job listing service, which allows companies to post job openings and search for candidates on LinkedIn. In 2016
Change in Company Type
LinkedIn was bought by Microsoft for $26 billion, in Microsoft's biggest acquisition. The deal brings together Microsoft's seemingly ubiquitous software suites, programs, and services with LinkedIn's massive roster of business people who trade job leads, information, and skills. LinkedIn is to operate as an independent subsidiary of Microsoft. However, the companies plan to integrate their products in ways that will add what could be a powerful social network element to Microsoft's products such as Office 365 and even Word. LinkedIn is now a part of Microsoft’s Productivity and Business Processes segment.
In addition to free services such as creating profiles, connecting and communicating with other LinkedIn members, and viewing business and job listing pages, the company generates revenue through three product lines: Talent Solutions, Marketing Solutions, and Premium Subscriptions.
Talent Solutions is LinkedIn's largest segment by sales. It includes recruitment and job listing services for enterprises and job seeker subscriptions for individuals. Marketing Solutions (advertising services for enterprises and individuals) and Premium Subscriptions (advanced listing, search, and communication services and tools) generate the remainder of sales.
LinkedIn's global headquarters are in Mountain View, California. Its EMEA headquarters are in Dublin and the company's APAC headquarters are located in Singapore. LinkedIn has offices in 30 cities around the world.
Its US offices are in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Omaha, San Francisco, Sunnyvale, and Washington D.C. International LinkedIn offices are located in Amsterdam, Bangalore, Beijing, Dubai, Dublin, Graz, Hong Kong, London, Madrid, Melbourne, Milan, Mumbai, Munich, New Delhi, Paris, Perth, São Paulo, Shanghai, Singapore, Stockholm, Sydney, Tokyo and Toronto.
Sales and Marketing
LinkedIn markets its products and services to large and small enterprise customers through a field sales force and also offers subscriptions via an online, self-serve channel.
Before being acquired by Microsoft, LinkedIn reported revenue of $2.99 billion in fiscal 2015, which was an increase of $772.14 million (or 35%) compared to its revenue in fiscal 2014. The primary reason for the spike in revenue was increased sales from its Talent Solutions segment.
In fiscal 2016 LinkedIn contributed revenue of $2.3 billion to Microsoft.
Key to LinkedIn's success is the growth of its member network, specifically through current members inviting others to join. That growth has been substantial, rising from 150 million at the end of 2011 to nearly 500 million in 2017. Along with its growing network of members, the company is looking to increase its ability to monetize its products and services.
LinkedIn has pushed its members to start publishing through its platform. The company also rolled out a sharing and curating product called Elevate that enables organizations to centralize their thought leadership content.
