USAA was founded in San Antonio in 1922 when 25 army officers decided to insure each other’s vehicles. Despite the hardships of The Great Depression, USAA’s membership doubled in 1931, growing from 15,000 to 30,000. In the early 1950s, USAA opened its first international office in Frankfurt, Germany, and in 1978, the company began offering toll-free phone service to its members. USAA launched its mobile app in 2010, allowing its members to perform bank transactions digitally. Today, USAA is still headquartered in San Antonio, Texas.
