Geographic Reach

In addition to MassMutual's operations in the US, where it is licensed in all states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, the MassMutual International affiliates has established subsidiaries or ventures in China, India, and Romania, through which it focuses on new product development and broadened distribution.

Sales and Marketing

MassMutual distributes its products through a network of affiliated sales representatives and financial advisors across the US, as well as from select international locations. It also sells its products through third-party distributors. The company conducts advertising campaigns through television, digital media, and search engine marketing. Customers include individuals, families, businesses, government agencies, and employer associations.

Financial Performance

MassMutual's revenue slightly increased to $32.6 billion in 2019 from $32.5 billion in 2018. MassMutual's fees and other income increased that year, partly offset by declines in premium income and net investment income.

Following its net loss of $716 million in 2018, MassMutual posted an income of $524 million in 2019. The improvement was mainly due to the slight increase in revenue, as well as a decrease in total benefits and expenses.

Cash and cash equivalents at the end of the year were $4.3 billion, a $415 million decrease from the year prior. Operating activities generated $8.9 billion in 2019 while investing and financing activities used $9.3 billion and $98 million, respectively. MassMutual's main cash uses in 2019 were acquired investments and change in repurchase agreements.

Strategy

MassMutual aims to help people secure their future and protect the ones they love. This is how MassMutual continues to deliver products and services to help its policyowners and customers achieve their financial goals, and protect those who matter most.

In late 2020, MassMutual and GIC announced its agreement with Rothesay Life to acquire Blackstone's 36% shareholding in Rothesay Life. With the acquisition, GIC and MassMutual will be substantially increasing their investment in Rothesay. In addition, MassMutual and the National Hockey League announced a multiyear partnership, naming MassMutual, the Official Life Insurance and Retirement Planning Partner of the NHL. This collaboration builds on MassMutual's role as a retirement plan provider for the NHL.

MassMutual also invested $1.3 million in Frayser Connect, a collaborative economic and community development initiative that aims to build local residents' financial and social capital. MassMutual also expanded MassMutual HealthBridge, which is providing free term life insurance to heroic frontline healthcare workers, to additional states with the highest volume of COVID-19 cases, including New York, New Jersey, California and Illinois. It also expanded its insurance protection for individuals diagnosed with breast cancer to cover more individuals.

In addition, MassMutual launched its RetireSMART Mobile App that allowed users to enroll in their employer's defined contribution retirement plan, determine how much to contribute from each paycheck, and then select their investments. MassMutual's RetireSMART aoo has been enhanced with those challenges in mind to encourage workers to enroll in their 401(k) or other retirement savings plan whenever it is convenient for them to do so.
