About Marsh USA Inc.

Marsh USA (Marsh) is the flagship operation of Marsh & McLennan Companies (MMC), one of the world's largest insurance brokerages. The company brokers insurance and provides risk management and consulting services to corporate clients, government agencies, and other organizations big and small. Marsh has some 34,000 agents and hundreds of brokerage locations in more than 130 countries. The company makes about 55% of its revenue in North America. Marsh also provides risk financing, insurance program design, and underwriting management, as well as claims administration and technological support services. MMC affiliate Guy Carpenter provides similar brokerage and risk management services to reinsurance companies; other MMC companies include consulting firms Mercer and Oliver Wyman.

Marsh is part of its parent's Risk and Insurance Services segment, which also includes Guy Carpenter. The company generates about 45% of the group's total revenue.

Marsh's primary operating units include Marsh & McLennan Agency (MMA) and Jelf (serving large corporations), Victor Insurance and Dovetail Insurance (smaller businesses), and Private Client Services (wealthy individuals). The company provides other services through Marsh Risk Consulting; Marsh Data, Digital, and Analytics; Marsh Captive Solutions, and Torrent Technologies.

Geographic Reach

The US and Canada account for about 55% of Marsh's revenue. Europe, the Middle East, and Africa contributes another 30%.

Sales and Marketing

Marsh serves clients of all sizes, from wealthy individuals and small businesses to large multi-national corporations.

Financial Performance

Marsh revenue increased 7% to $6.9 billion in 2018. Except for Latin America, all geographic regions saw growth that year. The US and Canada business alone increased 10% to $3.7 billion.

In response to global economic conditions and an increase in catastrophic events, Marsh has been promoting its image as an all-around risk adviser while maintaining its position as a top global brokerage firm. Parent company MMC has undergone restructuring measures in recent years to realign Marsh's organization around growing the risk management operations, as well as to control costs in the face of economic and competitive market pressures. In 2019 MMC became the world's largest reinsurance broker through its acquisition of Jardine Lloyd Thompson (JLT).

Because Marsh does so much international business, it is vulnerable to exchange rate fluctuations and various other risks, which could have a negative impact on earnings. Additionally, parent MMC took on significant debt to acquire JLT; that could make it difficult to invest in Marsh's growth should opportunities arise.
