About Great American Insurance Company

Great American Insurance Company is the flagship company of the Great American Insurance Group and is a subsidiary of American Financial Group (AFG). As a niche player in a number of specialty commercial property/casualty markets, the company provides insurance coverage to customers including industries such as healthcare, aviation, and construction, among others. It also provides risk management to public entities and equipment. Other products include crop insurance, marine insurance, professional liability coverage, and alternative markets.

The company's property and insurance group is made up of more than 30 niche specialty insurance industries that focus on specialized commercial products and services for businesses. Its annuity segment provides consumers a broad range of financial resources, including fixed-indexed, registered index-linked, variable, immediate, group annuity for pension buyout, and indexed annuities. While Great American Insurance is an autonomous subsidiary of AFG, its administrative functions are handled by a central organization that serves about 30 or so Great American Insurance Group divisions and companies. Policies are underwritten by specialized groups focusing on areas such as property and transportation, specialty casualty, and specialty financial.

Geographic Reach

Its corporate headquarters is located in Cincinnati, Ohio. It also has operations in Canada, Europe, Mexico, and Singapore.

Sales and Marketing

The property and casualty insurance group directs its sales efforts primarily through independent insurance agents and brokers, although small portions are written through employee agents.

Financial Performance

Great American Insurance's annuity premiums have tripled over the last ten years from $1.4 billion in 2019 to $5 billion in 2019. This tremendous premium growth demonstrates its continuing commitment to providing annuity products that can help clients reach their long-term goals. Property & Casualty Premiums also rose significantly over the years, rising to $7.3 billion in 2019. The majority of the written premiums come from Specialty Casualty, followed by Property and Transformation, and Specialty Financial.

Great American Insurance has innovative insurance solutions and specialization serves niche marketplaces that it knows well, giving it a successful foundation that spans generations.

Great American Insurance has released a variety of new products and services in recent years. In late 2020, it launched pomi, a digital health platform and website for accident and health (A&H) insurance. Pomi (an acronym for Peace of Mind Insurance) is the company's first all-digital platform where brokers can quote and bind most blanket special risk policies in just a few minutes. Great American Insurance Group launched a new admitted cyber risk insurance product, the Risk e-Business Cyber Loss & Liability Insurance Policy, for small and medium-sized businesses.

In addition, Great American Insurance Group recently added a new Accident & Health Division in mid-2019, becoming the company's 35th specialty property and casualty business and will build upon Great American's existing array of Accident & Health insurance coverages, focusing on customized coverages for organizations and educational institutions.

Company Background

It then added the business to its existing Equipment Management Solutions business. Great American Insurance has been around since 1872, making it one of the oldest insurers in the US. The Great American Ball Park, home of the Cincinnati Reds, is named after the company.
