About Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Mutual Insurance Company
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) is the state's leading health benefits organization. The company serves some 4.5 million members in the state, plus 1.6 million employees of Michigan-based companies living in other states. The not-for-profit company's group and individual insurance offerings include traditional indemnity, PPO, and POS plans, in addition to its Blue Care Network HMO plans. It also provides consumer-directed plans paired with health savings accounts (HSAs); Medicare, vision, dental, and prescription drug plans; and life, accident, long-term care, and workers' compensation policies. The organization is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
BCBSM's revenue increased to $29.3 billion in 2018, up 9% from 2017 as the firm reported higher premiums earned from underwritten and self-funded plans.
Addition to policyholders' reserves totaled $576 million that year, a 50% reduction over 2017 due to higher income tax expenses.
The company ended 2018 with nearly $1.3 billion in cash, down $130 million from 2017. Operating activities contributed $1.4 billion, while investing activities used $1.1 billion (mostly investment purchases), and financing activities used $422 million via debt payments.
Like most US health plans, BCBSM has combated the rise of health care costs with a combination of new product offerings that shift the burden of cost to members and programs that encourage healthy lifestyles and the use of lower-cost alternatives such as generic drugs. The company has adopted a patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model, which provides coordinated care and preventative care services to members to help avoid unnecessary, costly hospital visits.
The company regularly evaluates its health plans to better meet customer needs. BCBSM has customized its plans for small business clients in recent years. It has also added new individual market exchange plans to provide more flexible options for consumers.
The company has invested in technology to improve customer engagement, including adding a virtual assistant feature to its mobile app and launching an interactive health skill on the Amazon Alexa platform in 2018.
Not-for-profit health care organization Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan was founded in 1939. The company acquired Blue Care Network in 1978. In 2014 the company became a mutual insurance firm.
