About Amica Mutual Insurance Company
Amica Mutual Insurance Company is the oldest mutual automobile insurance company in the US. In addition to auto coverage, the company provides a variety of personal insurance products including home and life policies and renters, marine, motorcycle, event, umbrella, and excess liability coverage. Amica also offers annuities and other retirement investment plans. In addition, it provides policies for small business owners through a partnership with Hiscox Insurance. The company sells its policies directly to customers through some 45 offices throughout the US. Amica is a mutual company owned by its policyholders.
Property/casualty coverage is Amica's strong suit. The company offers coverage ranging from condo insurance to marine insurance on yachts. Auto policies account for about 55% of annual premiums, while more than 35% comes from homeowners policies. Its life insurance offerings include term or whole life policies.
Amica underwrites most of its property/casualty policies through subsidiary Amica Property and Casualty Insurance Company. Life insurance is issued through Amica Life Insurance Company. The group also has an insurance brokerage unit, Amica General Agency, which serves specialty customers across the US.
The company has about 1.6 million policies in force and holds assets of some $5.4 billion. It has a policyholders surplus of some $2.6 billion.
Authorized to do business throughout the US, Amica serves customers across all 50 states. The company's headquarters are located in Lincoln, Rhode Island.
Sales and Marketing
Amica uses television and internet advertising, as well as direct mail and social media campaigns, to market its products. Products are sold through its offices and direct agency locations. The company targets its sales towards individuals and families, but also serves small business customers.
Amica reported $2.3 billion in premiums earned in 2018, a 7% increase over 2017 results. Investment income was $215 million, down 18% from the previous year.
The company reported a 64% increase in net income in 2018 to some $136 million due to higher premium revenue and stable underwriting expenses.
The company ended 2018 with $237.3 million in cash, up $201.9 million from 2017. Operating activities contributed $37.6 million, while investing activities contributed $263.1 million (mostly from stock, security sales, and other asset proceeds), and financing activities used $98.8 million.
Amica has expanded its portfolio of insurance products over the years to reduce its dependence on personal auto and home policies. It has also grown by opening offices in new regions of the US.
The company also works to expand its policy sales volumes through marketing initiatives and technology enhancements. For example, Amica launched a new customer acquisition platform in 2018, allowing sales and service representatives to work within a single system and deliver faster customer response times. The company enhanced its Road Day claims adjuster app that year, allowing field employees to more quickly compile loss photos and access usage analytics; it also added new policy-access features to its website and launched a new version of its customer-facing mobile app.
Like other property/casualty insurers, the company has struggled with higher catastrophe losses in recent years from wildfires, hurricanes, and other events. To avoid risk from larger-than-usual claims volumes, Sentry must make sure that it sets aside sufficient reserves.
The company traces its roots back to 1907 when the Automobile Mutual Insurance Company of America was formed in Providence, Rhode Island, by A. T. Vigneron. The company established the Factory Mutual Liability Insurance Company of America to provide liability insurance to its policyholders in 1914.
It branched into homeowners insurance in 1956 and formed Amica Life Insurance in 1970.
In 1973 Automobile Mutual Insurance Company of America combined with Factory Mutual Liability Insurance Company of America to form Amica Mutual Insurance Company. The firm moved its headquarters to Lincoln, Rhode Island, in 1994.
