Amica Mutual Insurance Company is the oldest mutual automobile insurance company in the US. In addition to auto coverage, the company provides a variety of personal insurance products including home and life policies and renters, marine, motorcycle, event, umbrella, and excess liability coverage. Amica also offers annuities and other retirement investment plans. In addition, it provides policies for small business owners through a partnership with Hiscox Insurance. The company sells its policies directly to customers through some 45 offices throughout the US. Amica is a mutual company owned by its policyholders.
Property/casualty coverage is Amica's strong suit. The company offers coverage ranging from condo insurance to marine insurance on yachts.
Amica underwrites most of its property/casualty policies through subsidiary Amica Property and Casualty Insurance Company. Life insurance is issued through Amica Life Insurance Company. The group also has an insurance brokerage unit, Amica General Agency, which serves specialty customers across the US.
The company has about 1.6 million policies in force and holds assets of some $5.4 billion. It has a policyholder's surplus of approximately $2.8 billion.

Amica combines cutting-edge technologies with personal service to create insurance plans to fit the client's need. The company uses direct contact such as telephone, email, U.S. mail to attend clients and does not use agents to sell its insurance products.
Amica reported $2.4 billion in premiums earned in 2019, a 4% increase over 2018 results. Investment income was $232.6 million, up 9% from the previous year.
The company reported a 17% increase in net income in 2019 to some $158.1 million due to higher premium revenue and higher underwriting gain, despite a slight increase in expenses and a tax expense of $3.4 million.
The company ended 2019 with $112 million in cash, down $125.3 million from 2018. Operating activities contributed $41.5 million, while investing activities used $83.5 million, mostly for bonds and debt securities, mortgage loans, and other assets. Financing activities used anther $83.5 million, mainly for other cash applications.

Amica has taken steps to further enhance its service in 2019. It created a specialized Digital Assistance Center (DAC), staffed by tech-savvy team in its Service Center Operations group, to help with some of the more technical challenges. It also offered its photo appraisal app which allows its customers to upload pictures of customers' vehicle damage at their convenience. It also refreshed its mobile app with functionality that mirrors Amica's website, it is easier than ever to access ID cards, view policy documents, make changes to policies, pay bills and report and manage claims from customers' mobile devices. It also introduced Home Check by Amica, a home maintenance app that includes useful reminders, seasonal suggestions and preventive tips.
Additionally, it announced its COVID-19 Auto Premium Relief Program and Auto Refund Program in 2020. Its Auto Premium Relief will provide auto customers a 20% credit on their auto premiums for April and May, and its Auto Refund Program refunds up to 10% of customers' monthly auto premiums over a period of four months, both pending regulatory approval.
The company traces its roots back to 1907 when the Automobile Mutual Insurance Company of America was formed in Providence, Rhode Island, by A. T. Vigneron. The company established the Factory Mutual Liability Insurance Company of America to provide liability insurance to its policyholders in 1914.
It branched into homeowners insurance in 1956 and formed Amica Life Insurance in 1970.
In 1973 Automobile Mutual Insurance Company of America combined with Factory Mutual Liability Insurance Company of America to form Amica Mutual Insurance Company. The firm moved its headquarters to Lincoln, Rhode Island, in 1994.
