Tracing its roots to 1955, Aflac began when John, Paul and Bill Amos founded American Family Life Insurance Company of Columbus (now known simply as “Aflac”) with a view to providing a genuine, caring and personal service that, according to the company, remains the cornerstone of its organization to this day.

It's a formula that seems to have worked well: from those family-run roots, the firm has grown into a FORTUNE 500 company offering supplemental insurance products and services—cancer policies, accident insurance and disability coverage among them—at competitive prices.

The company employs technology, including its own SmartApp software and online services, to better serve accounts and policyholders, and make it easier for them to do business with Aflac.

Branches of the Aflac family tree extend across the globe, with offices in the United States, Puerto Rico and Japan. Aflac’s 5,240 U.S. employees and 70,000 licensed independent sales associates in the United States are committed to offering insurance products that enable its policyholders to focus on recovery rather than on financial stress in the event of injury or illness.

While Aflac provides policies for individuals and families, most of its customers apply for policies through their employers. More than 465,000 businesses of all sizes enhance their benefits packages by offering Aflac insurance. But unlike major medical insurance companies, Aflac provides insurance—and assurance—to sustain families during times of need. Aflac pays policyholders direct cash benefits to cover everyday living expenses, from groceries and utilities to house and car payments. Aflac serves more than 50 million people worldwide.
