About SAC Capital Advisors, L.P.

The man behind SAC

SAC Capital Advisors is one of the most well known hedge funds in the world, thanks to its big-swinging founder and head, Steven A. Cohen, whose initials are responsible for the firm's name. Cohen founded SAC in 1992 with $20 million (some of which was his money, some of which was investors' money). Today, SAC manages about $15 billion, employs approximately 800 people, and is said to be responsible for 3 percent of the NYSE's trading volume and 1 percent of the Nasdaq's on any given day. In addition to holding positions for a short amount of time, SAC also holds public and private equity investments for the long term. In 2008, Cohen's net worth was estimated to be $8 billion. And in 2009 and 2010, the firm received more than $2 billion in net inflows. More recently, in 2011, SAC made headlines when two of its former employees were convicted on insider trading charges.
