About Office of the Inspector General
Just as Pinocchio had Jiminy Cricket to be his "lord high keeper of the knowledge of right and wrong, counselor in moments of temptation, and guide along the straight and narrow path," the Secretary of Defense has the US Department of Defense Office of Inspector General. The DoD Inspector General was established in 1978 to serve as the military commander's "official conscience", advising on the detection and prevention of abuse, fraud, and waste within the department. The office employs auditors, investigators, inspectors, special agents, and professionals in support occupations such as budgeting, IT, and procurement. The DoD Inspector General has an annual budget of some $250 million.
