Attention, huddled masses, the line forms here. US Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) is responsible for the administration of immigration and naturalization adjudication functions and the establishment of immigration services policies and priorities. USCIS administers family- and employment- based petitions, naturalization services, and asylum and refugee processing. Part of the Department of Homeland Security, USCIS took over the service and benefit functions of the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) in 2003 after a restructuring shifted various INS functions to separate bureaus including the USCIS, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and US Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
