About Employee Benefits Security Administration

EBSA wants everyone to retire in style. Or at least not in poverty. The Employee Benefits Security Administration protects the integrity of pensions, health plans, and other employee benefits for working Americans. It provides information on more than 70,000 retirement plans and six million private health plan and helps people navigate the Department of Labor's paperwork maze. EBSA also educates plan officials so they can meet legal requirements and punishes violators of related laws. The agency has ten regional offices in major cities and 65 offices nationwide. EBSA took its current name in 2003; prior to that, it was the Pension and Welfare Benefits Program, begun in 1959.
