About Vans, Inc.

More than a half century after it was founded, Vans still hasn't lost its cool. Still popular with its core younger audience, Vans designs and sells footwear and apparel for casual wear and for use in activities such as skateboarding, snowboarding, surfing, bicycle motocross (BMX), and motocross. Vans merchandise is sold in the US by national chain stores and in skate, surf, and specialty shops in North America, Europe, and Asia. As part of its marketing strategy, Vans backs bands through music festivals and sponsors surfing, skateboarding, and other sports competitions. The company is owned by V.F. Corporation.

Financial Performance

Vans is one of its parent's most popular brands worldwide. Sales for Vans rose 24% from fiscal 2018 to fiscal 2019, thanks to growth across all channels and regions. The shoe maker, which hit $2 billion in sales in 2018, attributes the boost to new store openings, comparable store sales growth, a strong wholesale performance, and an expanded e-commerce business.

Strategy

Vans is hitting all the right notes with its younger target audience. The company has seen back-to-back years of strong growth, with 24% growth in fiscal year 2019 and 29% in fiscal 2018 thanks to operational growth in both the direct-to-consumer and wholesale channels.

Vans is expanding its direct-to-consumer business with new stores openings and an expanding e-commerce business. The company plans to grow revenues from $2 billion in 2018 to $5 billion by 2023 by focusing on a direct-to-consumer model.

Vans is moving up in popularity among teens. A recent Piper Jaffray survey showed Vans right behind Nike as the most popular shoe brand with teens, with 20% of teens naming Vans as their favorite brand. To keep teens interested, the company has a steady stream of collaborations. Recent tie-ins have included Marvel, David Bowie, Harry Potter, NASA, and Nintendo.

The company has launched a loyalty program called "Vans Family" offering shoppers points for shopping and access to exclusive patterns on footwear and accessories. Vans also launched a shoe recycling pilot program at more than 20 stores in California in 2018.  In a fashion environment where comfort matters as much as style, the company has added new cushion technology to its shoes to make them more comfortable.
