White Claw is a brand of Mark Anthony Brewing. As the fourth largest brewing company in the United States, Mark Anthony is the perfect home for the increasingly popular White Claw hard seltzers. The drink was created in 2016 by Vancouver wine salesman and alcoholic beverage legend Anthony von Mandl. The now famous summer drink didn’t truly take off in American markets until 2019, when the brand updated its messaging to focus on health-conscious drinkers. Sales quadrupled in 2019, thus beginning the brand’s rise to a staple alcoholic beverage. The brand’s social media presence was also a huge factor in its rise to success. White Claw has over 100,000 tagged Instagram posts, and a viral video by comedian Trevor Wallace coined the now-popular saying, “Ain’t no laws when you’re drinking Claws!”
Although the social media frenzy around White Claw grows among Millennial and Gen-Z audiences, it’s White Claw’s gluten-free, low-calorie formula that makes it so commercially successful. Today, the brand offers 11 classic flavors, four tea-inspired flavors, and two White Claw Surge flavors (Surge is White Claw’s higher alcohol content drink). The company continues to rapidly grow and innovate while remaining private. The rise in hard seltzer drinkers in the United States isn’t just a blip in trends. Von Mandl continues to heavily invest in the brand, saying, “the consumers flocking to White Claw today are not going to magically return to the mega-beer brands of yesterday.” The company has established production facilities across the United States, with a large investment of $385 million in 2020 in two state-of-the-art facilities in New Jersey and Arizona.
Anthony von Mandl has no plans to take this slow with his star beverage brand. White Claw’s rise to success is a clear example of a product with integrity and uniqueness that consumers will continue to love.
